Oh, this could be fun.
Really fun.
Because beginning Monday, September 7, mornings on Radio Abilene’s Variety Hits 106.3 The Raider KTJK are becoming a family affair.
Morning host and Sales Manager Chad Ray is getting a new partner behind the microphone.
Her name is Lauren.
She’s his fiancée.
Yes.
HIS FIANCÉE.
And somewhere in Abilene, a Program Director has apparently decided that the safest way to build a morning show is to put two people planning a wedding in the same studio every morning and turn on the microphones.
WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?
Welcome to Raider Mornings with Chad Ray & Lauren.
I already want to hear this.
Somebody Please Make Sure They Have Separate Microphones
Because this isn’t just another co-host announcement.
This comes with BUILT-IN MATERIAL.
Most morning shows spend months trying to develop chemistry.
Chad and Lauren presumably already know each other’s habits.
She knows what annoys him.
He knows what annoys her.
She knows which stories he absolutely should not tell on the radio.
Which means, naturally…
THOSE ARE EXACTLY THE STORIES WE NEED TO HEAR.
There’s no six-month period of politely getting acquainted.
No:
“So Lauren, tell us something interesting about yourself.”
Chad already knows.
Lauren knows Chad.
And when one of them says:
“That’s NOT what happened.”
Now we’ve got ourselves a morning show.
The Best Morning Radio Has Always Been About Relationships
That’s what makes this potentially really good.
Chemistry is one of the hardest things in radio to manufacture.
You can find two individually talented personalities and put them together in a studio.
Nothing.
You can research them.
Coach them.
Build clocks around them.
Nothing.
Then you put two people together who genuinely know each other, trust each other, challenge each other and can make one another laugh…
and suddenly the microphone disappears.
THAT’S WHEN RADIO GETS GOOD.
Listeners don’t want to feel like they’re hearing two people execute “Morning Show Segment Number Three.”
They want to feel like they’ve wandered into a conversation they probably weren’t supposed to hear.
Chad and Lauren have an opportunity to create exactly that.
Chad Has Been Driving The Morning Bus By Himself
Ray has been handling mornings solo on The Raider since March 2025.
And solo mornings require a particular kind of broadcaster.
You’re the setup.
You’re the punchline.
You’re the person reacting to your own story without appearing to react to your own story.
There’s nobody sitting across the console giving you that look that says:
PLEASE STOP TALKING.
Now there is.
Lauren.
Congratulations, Chad.
Your days of telling a story without somebody immediately available to correct your version of events are apparently over.
And Chad Already Has One Of Those Great Local Radio Resumes
This is another reason the pairing makes sense.
Chad Ray hasn’t simply been sitting inside a radio studio his entire career.
He’s been connected to the community in several different ways.
He’s handled public-address duties for the Abilene Flying Bison baseball team.
He’s called McMurry University War Hawks football.
He’s worked at KPOS in Post, Texas.
He’s moved through sports, play-by-play, radio and sales.
And now he’s both Sales Manager and morning personality at The Raider.
That matters because the best local personalities don’t merely know which roads connect different parts of town.
They know the people using them.
They’ve been at the games.
They’ve met the advertisers.
They’ve attended the events.
They know what everybody is talking about because they actually live where everybody is talking about it.
That’s local radio.
Now Add The Person Who Knows Chad Better Than The Listeners Ever Will
And THAT is where this could become something special.
Lauren brings an entirely different perspective to the show simply because of the relationship.
Think about the possibilities.
Chad tells listeners what happened Saturday night.
Lauren tells them what actually happened Saturday night.
Chad explains why he bought something.
Lauren explains why he absolutely did not need it.
Chad offers relationship advice.
Lauren slowly turns her chair toward him.
CONTENT.
Wedding planning?
Content.
Family?
Content.
Household disagreements?
Within reasonable boundaries…
CONTENT.
Who takes longer getting ready?
Content.
Who forgot what?
Content.
Who leaves dishes where?
Content.
Who controls the thermostat?
Oh, we’re getting calls on THAT one.
But here’s the trick.
Don’t force it.
The magic won’t be that they’re engaged.
The magic will be allowing listeners to hear the natural relationship that already exists.
Please Dont Turn This Into A Radio Sitcom
That’s important.
The temptation with a couple on the radio is obvious.
Every break becomes:
MEN ARE LIKE THIS
WOMEN ARE LIKE THAT
No.
We’ve heard that show.
Approximately 47,000 times.
Chad and Lauren have something much more valuable available to them.
Their actual relationship.
The weird little things.
The unexpected disagreements.
The moments when one of them makes the other genuinely laugh.
The story Chad begins telling and Lauren suddenly realizes:
“Oh dear God he’s actually going to tell this.”
That’s where the good stuff lives.
Not manufactured conflict.
Not fake arguments.
Not morning-show theater.
REAL CHEMISTRY.
And Variety Hits Is A Pretty Great Playground For This
The Raider’s Variety Hits positioning gives the show another advantage.
The music itself can move around.
That means the personalities can become the consistent thread holding the morning together.
When you’re building a personality-driven morning show around a broad musical environment, the hosts become even more important.
The audience isn’t necessarily showing up solely because they need to hear one particular current record at 7:42.
They’re showing up for the experience.
Music.
Conversation.
Local information.
Laughs.
Community.
Chad and Lauren.
That’s how a radio show becomes a habit instead of simply background noise.
Somebody At The Raider Understands Something Important
Local radio does not beat Spotify by trying to become Spotify.
It doesn’t beat YouTube by pretending YouTube doesn’t exist.
It doesn’t beat podcasts by playing eighteen songs uninterrupted and eliminating every trace of humanity between them.
Radio wins where those platforms struggle.
PEOPLE.
Local people.
Talking about local things.
Creating relationships with other local people.
A streaming service can give somebody in Abilene practically every song ever recorded.
It cannot give them Chad getting himself into trouble at 7:17 Tuesday morning and Lauren sitting across the console saying:
“Would you like to try that story again?”
THAT is your competitive advantage.
Use it.
An On The Dial Perspective
I love experiments like this because they aren’t complicated.
There isn’t some revolutionary artificial-intelligence technology involved.
Nobody invented a new format.
Nobody needed a 96-page research presentation.
The idea is wonderfully old-school:
PUT INTERESTING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND TURN ON THE MICROPHONES.
Then let something happen.
That’s radio.
And Chad and Lauren already have the most difficult ingredient.
A relationship.
Now they have to translate it to the audience.
Bring Abilene into their world.
Talk about what’s happening locally.
Let listeners participate.
Make the audience part of the relationship.
Laugh.
Disagree.
Tell stories.
Be ridiculous occasionally.
Be serious when life requires it.
And whatever you do…
DON’T OVERPRODUCE THE HUMANITY OUT OF IT.
Because the potential magic of Raider Mornings with Chad Ray & Lauren isn’t that a radio station put an engaged couple on the air.
It’s that listeners might eventually feel like they’re sitting at the breakfast table with them.
And About This Wedding
There is one final matter we need to discuss.
Chad and Lauren are engaged.
They’re now doing a morning show together.
This means listeners are going to have opinions.
Oh, LORD, are they going to have opinions.
The wedding venue.
The music.
The food.
The first-dance song.
The guest list.
The honeymoon.
Somebody will call and tell Chad exactly what he’s doing wrong.
Someone else will take Lauren’s side before they even know what the argument is about.
By approximately Week Three, half of Abilene may believe it has been appointed to the wedding-planning committee.
Embrace it.
Because someday they’re going to look back at these mornings and realize something pretty remarkable happened.
While they were building a life together…
THEY GOT TO BUILD A RADIO SHOW TOGETHER TOO.
That’s pretty darn cool.
So set two alarms.
Make two coffees.
Check the microphones.
And Chad…
just remember one important rule of successful morning radio with your fiancée:
There are times when being right makes excellent radio.
And there are times when being right means you’re sleeping on the couch.
Choose wisely.
Monday, September 7, Raider Mornings with Chad Ray & Lauren begins on 106.3 The Raider.
Abilene…
YOUR NEW MORNING SHOW IS ABOUT TO BECOME A RELATIONSHIP WITNESS.
This should be fun.
