Kannon Is Coming Back to Atlanta Again and Q99-7 Just Made Nights a Whole Lot More Interesting

Some radio personalities work in a market.

Some become connected to a market.

And apparently Kannon and Atlanta are simply incapable of staying away from each other.

Cumulus Media is adding The Kannon Show to nights on CHR Q99.7 WWWQ Atlanta, bringing a familiar voice back to the Atlanta airwaves for what will be Kannon’s third chapter in the market.

Third!

At this point, Atlanta shouldn’t even make him turn in the building key when he leaves.

Just put it in an envelope marked:

SEE YOU IN A FEW YEARS.

But underneath the humor, this is a pretty interesting programming move for Q99.7 because Cumulus isn’t grabbing an anonymous voice to fill some hours.

They’re adding somebody who understands contemporary hit radio, knows Atlanta, has programmed major-market radio, currently works on-air in Florida and oversees nationally distributed programming.

That’s a hell of a lot of experience walking into a night shift.

Atlanta and Kannon Go Way Back

The first chapter takes us to the early 2000s and one of the more memorable stations of that era in Atlanta:

95.5 The Beat WBTS-FM.

Kannon served as Music Director and handled nights during his first Atlanta run.

For anyone who remembers that period of Rhythmic CHR, you already know what kind of radio environment that was.

Big personalities.

Big records.

Big energy.

Phones exploding.

Night radio actually sounding like night radio.

And being both Music Director and night personality meant Kannon wasn’t merely talking between records.

He was helping shape what came out of the speakers.

Then Atlanta Got Him Back

Years later, Kannon returned.

This time the destination was Star 94 WSTR, where he served as Assistant Program Director and afternoon personality beginning in 2019.

Different station.

Different format environment.

Different era of Atlanta radio.

Same guy.

That second run continued until 2025.

And now, barely enough time has passed for Atlanta to start wondering where he went…

Here comes Chapter Three.

Q99 7 Is the Perfectly Logical Next Stop

Kannon joining Q99.7 makes sense because CHR isn’t foreign territory for him.

Not even remotely.

This is somebody whose career has repeatedly intersected with contemporary music formats as both a personality and programmer.

And Q99.7 isn’t some sleepy little assignment.

This is Atlanta CHR.

One of America’s biggest, fastest-moving and most culturally influential markets.

Q99.7 Atlanta

You don’t win there by sounding like somebody calmly supervising a Spotify playlist.

Atlanta has too much personality for that.

The station needs to feel alive.

And nights, particularly in CHR, should have some damn electricity.

Remember When Nights Were Where Radio Got Weird

We’d like some of that back, please.

Night radio used to be the laboratory.

Take requests.

Talk to listeners.

Start ridiculous conversations.

Break records.

Let teenagers take over the phones.

Make somebody sitting in their bedroom feel like they’re hanging out with the person on the radio.

Create trouble within FCC regulations.

That’s the job.

CHR nights shouldn’t sound like afternoons after everybody went home.

And Kannon has spent enough time doing personality-driven contemporary radio to understand that.

His Resume Gets Pretty Ridiculous When You Lay It All Out

Atlanta is only part of this story.

Kannon has programmed Wired 96.5 WRDW-FM Philadelphia.

He has hosted mornings in Dallas at i93.3 KLIF-FM and Amp 103.7 KVIL.

He also handled afternoons at 102.9 Now KDMX in Dallas.

Then there’s his current work in Southwest Florida, where Kannon hosts afternoons at 96.9 WINK-FM in Fort Myers.

96.9 WINK-FM

And somehow that still isn’t everything.

Because Kannon Also Has Open House Party

This is where the national component becomes significant.

Kannon serves as Brand Manager and host connected to the legendary syndicated Open House Party, while also hosting the daily syndicated The Kannon Show through United Stations.

Open House Party

The Kannon Show

For CHR radio people, Open House Party carries some serious history.

The program has spent decades bringing weekend personality radio to stations across America, and attaching Kannon’s experience to that brand says plenty about his understanding of how contemporary radio needs to move.

So look at the complete picture.

He’s currently doing local radio.

He’s doing syndicated radio.

He’s managing a national brand.

He’s spent time programming.

He’s worked Philadelphia.

Dallas.

Fort Myers.

Atlanta.

And now Atlanta gets him again.

Here’s What Makes the Q99 7 Decision Smart

Familiarity without stagnation.

Kannon knows Atlanta, but he’s been away doing other things.

He isn’t arriving cold and trying to figure out the difference between Buckhead and Bankhead by Friday.

He understands the market.

But he’s also bringing experience accumulated elsewhere.

That’s valuable.

Radio companies sometimes underestimate how useful it is to hire somebody who already understands the cultural rhythm of a city.

Atlanta is not Generic Major Market Number Seven.

Atlanta has an attitude.

Atlanta has musical history.

Atlanta has enormous influence over popular culture.

Atlanta listeners can smell fake from approximately three counties away.

Kannon already knows the room.

And There Is an Alternative Perspective Here

This also demonstrates something important about syndicated programming.

Syndication doesn’t automatically have to mean generic.

That’s the trap.

If you’re putting nationally distributed programming into a local station, the goal should be making the listener feel like the personality actually belongs there.

In this particular case, Kannon legitimately has Atlanta history.

Twice.

Now three times.

That’s an advantage Q99.7 should exploit mercilessly.

Talk Atlanta.

Reference Atlanta.

React to Atlanta.

Let listeners know this isn’t some mysterious human broadcasting from a bunker 900 miles away who occasionally remembers to say the station’s call letters.

Make it feel local because Kannon actually knows local.

And Please Let Nights Be Fun

That’s our biggest request.

Q99.7 has an opportunity here.

Don’t overcomplicate it.

Don’t sterilize it.

Don’t make every break twelve seconds long because somebody’s spreadsheet says humans become frightened at second thirteen.

Let personality happen.

Kannon knows how to do this.

Let him.

CHR has spent years competing against on-demand music platforms by sometimes becoming more like an on-demand music platform.

That’s backwards.

Spotify will always be better at being Spotify.

Radio should be better at being radio.

Give us people.

Give us spontaneity.

Give us companionship.

Give us somebody who knows Atlanta talking to Atlanta.

Kannon’s Career Also Says Something About Longevity

Formats change.

Companies change.

Stations disappear.

Call letters move.

Management changes.

Entire technologies arrive.

But broadcasters who can adapt keep finding another microphone.

Kannon has moved between programming and personality.

Local and syndicated.

Mornings, afternoons and nights.

Rhythmic CHR, CHR and Hot AC.

That’s survival.

More importantly, that’s versatility.

The modern radio personality almost has to be a Swiss Army knife.

Kannon has apparently collected the whole damn knife drawer.

An On The Dial Perspective

Kannon returning to Atlanta for a third run is more interesting than simply adding another syndicated show to another nighttime lineup. Q99.7 is getting a personality with legitimate history in the market, extensive CHR experience, major-market programming credentials and current national responsibilities through Open House Party and The Kannon Show. That’s a combination worth using. The opportunity now is to make sure his Atlanta history becomes part of the product. If nationally distributed personality radio is going to work, it should feel connected to the station carrying it. In this case, Q99.7 has a pretty significant head start because Kannon already knows Atlanta and Atlanta already knows Kannon.

So here we go again.

First 95.5 The Beat.

Then Star 94.

Now Q99.7.

Three Atlanta chapters.

Three different brands.

Three different eras.

Same Kannon.

At this rate, we’re penciling him in for another Atlanta return sometime around 2034 just to save everybody the trouble.

But for now…

Welcome back to Atlanta, Kannon.

Again.

Turn the mic on.

Turn the monitors up.

Make nights fun.

And Q99.7…

you might want to keep that building key handy this time.
