Reyna 103.1 Gives Melissa Rios the Morning Crown as Los Angeles Gets a New Voice to Wake Up With

Los Angeles has a new queen of morning radio, and Entravision is making sure she has a place to hold court. Melissa Rios is taking over mornings on the recently launched Reyna 103.1, bringing La Tiendita Mornings with Melissa Rios to KDLD Santa Monica and KDLE Newport Beach weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m. And while this is an important addition to the station’s developing lineup, it’s also an interesting second act for a familiar Southern California personality.

Rios most recently handled afternoons at Meruelo Media’s Cali 93.9 KLLI before the station changed direction in July, shifting to a bilingual Adult Contemporary format.

Now she’s returning to the microphone with something every broadcaster appreciates: a fresh opportunity and a morning audience to call her own.

And Entravision isn’t simply launching another Spanish-language morning program.

Reyna 103.1 is attempting to build an entire entertainment brand around the lives, experiences, music, and interests of Southern California Latinas.

Introduced in August, Reyna combines Spanish and English music, digital content, social media personalities, and cultural conversations aimed at one of Los Angeles’ most influential audiences.

That makes Rios an important addition.

She’s not just filling a four-hour shift. She’s helping establish the daily personality of a station that’s still introducing itself to the market.

And that’s where this gets interesting.

Los Angeles is already one of America’s most competitive Spanish-language radio markets, with established personalities, powerful brands, and listeners who have plenty of choices.

Building loyalty requires more than a clever station name.

It requires somebody who can make the audience feel understood.

I’ve always believed morning radio works best when listeners feel like they’re spending time with somebody who knows their world, their neighborhoods, their culture, and the challenges waiting for them when they walk out the door.

That’s the opportunity Rios now has.

From East Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley, and across Orange County, Reyna is trying to create something that feels connected to the women it serves.

And giving the station a recognizable morning personality is an important step in making that connection.

The station already has its crown. Now it has somebody to help give that crown a personality.

Congratulations to Melissa Rios and Entravision on the launch.

The next challenge is turning a new morning show into a daily habit for Southern California listeners.

And in Los Angeles, where everyone seems to be fighting for attention, that might be the biggest competition of all.
