Sometimes radio has a way of reconnecting people with the part of themselves they never truly left behind.
After nearly a decade away from regular on-air work, Steven Mills — known across the industry as “Just Plain Steve” — is officially returning to the microphone, joining WXQA “98.3 The Seagull” for swing duties on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
And honestly, this feels like one of those radio stories that reminds you why people fall in love with the business in the first place.
Steve has spent the last ten years heavily involved in the digital side of broadcasting, including time serving as a digital program director with Cumulus Media. Even while helping shape content strategy, digital brands, and station operations behind the scenes, he never lost that passion for radio itself.
You can hear it when he talks about being back on the air.
There’s genuine excitement there.
And that kind of energy is contagious.
What makes this funny for me personally is that I had spent weeks talking with Steve about his career and radio background before something suddenly clicked. I knew he had done a tremendous amount of imaging and voice work over the years, especially for stations connected to Cumulus. Then one day I heard a promo running on The Seagull and immediately recognized the voice.
I had already been hearing “Just Plain Steve” on stations for years.
Especially around Atlanta.
I just never connected the dots until that moment.
It honestly felt like reconnecting with an old radio friend I didn’t realize I already knew.
That’s one of the strange things about this business. Voices become familiar long before faces ever do.
Now Steve is bringing that same familiar personality and experience directly to listeners on WXQA, a station that continues building its identity around Adult Contemporary music, local information, weather, traffic, and community connection throughout the region.
And in a radio world increasingly filled with automation and stripped-down presentation, having someone who still genuinely loves the craft matters.
Because Steve is a radio guy in every sense of the phrase.
But beyond the radio story is the much bigger human story.
Steve is currently battling kidney failure and undergoing dialysis while actively searching for a living kidney donor. He is O-positive and has been openly sharing his health journey with friends, colleagues, listeners, and the broader community in hopes of raising awareness about living donation.
Two potential donors have already been tested. One was found to be a match but was ultimately unable to donate for medical reasons. Another was not compatible. Additional testing continues, and Steve remains hopeful that the right donor will eventually be found.
At the same time, he continues navigating the physical and emotional realities of dialysis treatments while also facing ongoing medical and supply-related expenses tied to his care.
And yet, through all of it, he still wanted to get back on the air.
Honestly, maybe that says everything about who he is.
For many people, radio is a job.
For people like Steve, it becomes part of their DNA.
That connection never really disappears, no matter how many years pass or how much life changes around you.
Now, listeners on Maryland’s Eastern Shore will once again hear a voice that has quietly been part of American radio for years — only this time, they’ll hear the person behind it too.
And for Steve, this return feels less like a comeback and more like reconnecting with an old friend he missed dearly.
Welcome back to the airwaves, Just Plain Steve.
The Seagull just got a little more interesting.
