A groundbreaking collaboration is bringing together some of the nation’s most influential public radio voices with a shared vision for the future.

Fifteen public radio stations from across the United States have joined forces to launch the Black Public Radio Network (BPRN), a new national alliance focused on expanding the reach, sustainability, and long-term success of public radio stations serving Black communities. The initiative represents one of the most ambitious collaborations of its kind in public broadcasting, combining resources, ideas, and expertise to strengthen stations both financially and culturally.

The founding network includes 12 stations licensed to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), along with three established public radio outlets: WBGO in Newark/New York, The Drop (KUVO-HD2) in Denver, and HYFIN in Milwaukee.

The effort was spearheaded by Ernest Walker, General Manager of KTSU 90.9 FM in Houston, who envisioned a unified organization that could help member stations grow through strategic partnerships, shared resources, audience development, and expanded revenue opportunities. Rather than operating independently, participating stations will work together to build a stronger national presence while continuing to serve their local communities.

The network has already begun a six-month planning process aimed at creating its organizational structure, developing national sponsorship opportunities, and establishing a roadmap for future growth. Industry consulting firm Paragon has been selected to assist with strategic planning, while VuHaus Group will focus on developing national underwriting and sponsorship initiatives.

Adding further experience to the project, veteran public media executives Jacquie Gales Webb, formerly with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and Nikki Swarn, former General Manager of The Drop in Denver, have joined the planning effort to help shape the network’s long-term strategy.

The creation of the Black Public Radio Network marks a significant milestone for public broadcasting, bringing together stations with a common mission to amplify voices, strengthen community service, and create new opportunities for collaboration on a national scale. As the media landscape continues to evolve, this alliance positions its member stations to pursue greater visibility, stronger financial stability, and a broader impact for audiences across the country.
