The End Of An Era At Mix 101.5? Or The Beginning Of Radio’s Next Reinvention?

Morning radio doesn’t often lose two-thirds of its cast in the span of a week.

When it does, people notice.

Capitol Broadcasting’s Mix 101.5 (WRAL-FM) in Raleigh is preparing for one of the biggest lineup changes in the station’s recent history as Bryan Lord and Sarah King step away from the morning show, leaving Kyle Smelser to usher in a new era.

The departures close nearly a decade of one of the Triangle’s most familiar morning teams.

The trio first came together in 2016 as “Two Men and a Mom,” later evolving into the station’s current morning brand. During that time, they became part of countless commutes, school drop-offs, celebrations, and everyday moments for listeners throughout central North Carolina.

Bryan Lord is returning to his hometown of Indianapolis, citing family as the driving force behind the decision. Sarah King is also stepping away from the show to devote more time to her family while exploring the next chapter of her professional life.

Rather than rebuilding from scratch, Mix 101.5 is choosing evolution over revolution.

Kyle Smelser remains in mornings, joined by Meghan Lamontagne, who has been heard in middays since joining the station in 2024. Lamontagne already has deep roots in the Raleigh market following previous on-air work at G105, while also serving as an in-arena host for both the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and the NWSL’s North Carolina Courage.

Here’s the alternative perspective.

This isn’t simply about two personalities leaving.

It’s another reminder that today’s radio careers increasingly revolve around life—not just ratings.

For decades, broadcasters often stayed in one city for an entire career. Today, priorities are changing. Family, lifestyle, personal fulfillment, and work-life balance are becoming just as influential as contracts and market size.

That’s reshaping radio in ways the industry couldn’t have imagined twenty years ago.

At the same time, stations face a different challenge.

How do you honor nearly a decade of chemistry while introducing a fresh dynamic that feels authentic from day one?

That’s the balancing act awaiting Mix 101.5.

One chapter is ending.

Another is about to begin.

And for one of North Carolina’s heritage radio brands, the next morning show story starts with familiar voices, new chemistry, and an opportunity to write the station’s next decade.
