Well THAT didn’t take long.
One week you’re out.
The next week you’re preparing to walk into another radio station in the same market, reclaim a familiar morning microphone, bring several familiar voices with you and replace a nationally syndicated show with local radio.
Ladies and gentlemen…
THIS is how you make a radio comeback.
After his departure from Townsquare Media’s News/Talk WIBX in Utica last week, longtime market personality Bill Keeler is heading right back to morning radio, joining locally owned Arjuna Broadcasting’s Classic Rock 92.7 The Drive WXUR Herkimer/Utica.
And this isn’t simply Keeler finding another job.
He’s going back to a station where he’s already done mornings before.
Keeler previously occupied the WXUR morning chair from 2007 through 2010.
Now, roughly sixteen years later…
HE’S COMING BACK.
The station is already promoting Keeler in the Morning, scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 8 from 6 to 9 a.m.
You couldn’t write a better local-radio storyline if you tried.
And Bill Isn’t Walking Through The Door Alone
This is where the story gets even more interesting.
Keeler’s longtime executive producer Davey Smith is making the move.
News anchor Jeff Monaski is coming too.
And former Talk 100.7 WUTQ Talk of the Town host Jay Aiello is joining the operation as well.
That’s not simply hiring a morning host.
THAT’S ASSEMBLING A LOCAL RADIO TEAM.
And they’re moving into morning drive where WXUR has been carrying the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show.
Let that sink in for a minute.
A locally owned Classic Rock station is taking syndicated morning programming out…
AND PUTTING LOCAL PERSONALITIES IN.
Can we please make a little noise for that?
Because we spend an enormous amount of time writing stories that go exactly the opposite direction.
Local show out.
Syndication in.
Local personality out.
Voice tracking in.
Local newsroom reduced.
Regionalized programming expanded.
Another market-specific voice disappears and another computer somewhere gets told which satellite feed to open.
This time?
LOCAL IS GOING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION.
And I absolutely love it.
This Is Why You Never Assume Somebody Is Finished In Radio
Keeler’s departure from WIBX could have easily been the ending.
Longtime morning personality leaves.
Thank you for the years.
Everybody posts some old pictures.
Industry moves along.
Except radio careers don’t always follow the script.
Sometimes the next chapter is sitting right down the street.
And in this case, the next chapter happens to be somewhere Keeler already knows extraordinarily well.
That’s what makes this so fascinating.
He’s not arriving in Utica.
He’s Utica radio.
He knows the market.
The market knows him.
He understands the audience.
Advertisers know the name.
Listeners know the voice.
And now WXUR gets to take an established local personality and immediately plug that relationship into its morning drive.
That’s enormously different from introducing somebody nobody in the market has ever heard before.
Sixteen Years Later The Door Opens Again
There’s also something beautifully radio about returning to a station after sixteen years.
Think about everything that has happened since Keeler last hosted mornings there.
Presidents have changed.
Phones have changed.
Cars have changed.
Social media has changed.
Radio has changed.
The entire concept of what a morning show is has changed.
And now he’s walking back through that door.
Same frequency.
Same market.
Completely different media world.
That gives this comeback an interesting advantage because Keeler isn’t simply returning to recreate 2009.
He gets to bring decades of additional experience back to a place that was already part of his story.
That’s pretty darn cool.
And This Time The Morning Show Is Bigger Than The Transmitter
Here’s another smart piece.
The program isn’t going to live exclusively at 92.7.
The show is also expected to stream through Facebook and YouTube.
GOOD.
That’s what local radio should be doing in 2026.
Stop treating the transmitter as the entire product.
The transmitter is distribution.
The SHOW is the product.
The personalities are the product.
The conversations are the product.
The relationship with Utica is the product.
If somebody wants to hear it on 92.7, wonderful.
If somebody wants to watch the studio on Facebook, wonderful.
If somebody wants to catch it on YouTube, wonderful.
The question shouldn’t be:
How do we force everybody back onto an FM radio?
The question should be:
How many different ways can we put our local personalities in front of the audience?
That’s modern radio.
And Lets Talk About Replacing Bob And Tom
There is absolutely nothing wrong with The Bob & Tom Show.
It’s one of the great syndicated success stories in American morning radio.
But this isn’t really about Bob and Tom.
It’s about Utica.
WXUR has an opportunity to create something a syndicated show fundamentally cannot.
A program that wakes up talking about what happened in Utica yesterday.
A program that knows the local politics.
The restaurants.
The schools.
The characters.
The controversies.
The ridiculous thing everybody in town is talking about.
The snow.
The roads.
The sports.
The people.
That’s the advantage.
A national show can be fantastic.
But it cannot be more Utica than Utica.
And when you’ve got recognizable local personalities available who can actually execute that kind of program?
Put them on.
This Is Also A Pretty Big Statement From An Independent Broadcaster
Don’t overlook who is doing this.
WXUR describes itself as a locally owned independent rock radio station.
That matters.
Because independent operators can’t always outspend the enormous groups.
They can’t always buy the biggest syndicated packages.
They don’t have hundreds of stations across the country to spread expenses across.
But they can do something enormously powerful.
They can be ridiculously local.
They can make decisions because something makes sense for their market, rather than because it fits a national programming template.
And putting Bill Keeler and a group of established Utica personalities into morning drive is about as locally targeted as it gets.
An On The Dial Perspective
This is one of those moves I want radio programmers around the country to study.
Not because every station should immediately dump syndication.
That’s ridiculous.
Syndication can work beautifully.
But because this demonstrates what can happen when a local operator recognizes an opportunity sitting right in front of them.
A recognizable morning personality becomes available.
He has history with your station.
His audience knows him.
Members of his team are available.
Other established local talent is available.
You have a syndicated morning show.
HELLO.
Sometimes radio programming doesn’t require a 74-page strategic presentation.
Sometimes the answer is standing outside your front door.
OPEN IT.
And What A Difference A Week Makes
That’s the part of this story I love most.
Radio can be unbelievably cruel.
One telephone call can change somebody’s career.
One meeting can end a chapter that lasted years.
But this business can also be wonderfully unpredictable.
Sometimes the microphone that goes dark on Friday…
lights up somewhere else the next week.
And sometimes that microphone happens to be in a studio where you’ve already made a little history.
So welcome back to The Drive, Bill.
Welcome Davey.
Welcome Jeff.
Welcome Jay.
Utica morning radio is about to get considerably more local.
And after everything we’ve written lately about personalities disappearing and local programming being replaced…
it feels pretty damn good to write one where the LOCAL PEOPLE are the ones replacing the syndicated show.
That’s not simply a programming change.
THAT’S LOCAL RADIO FIGHTING BACK.
And if the people of Utica follow Bill Keeler through yet another chapter of his career, nobody should be surprised.
Because frequencies change.
Call letters change.
Companies change.
Studios change.
Relationships don’t disappear nearly that easily.
September 8…
92.7 The Drive…
6 a.m.
Keeler is back.
Now THAT is one heck of a second act.
