The radio industry lost one of its most respected programmers, consultants, and creative minds this week.
Mike Marino, whose influence stretched across multiple formats and countless radio stations over several decades, passed away on Thursday, July 16, following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 60 years old.
While many in the industry never knew he was fighting such a difficult battle, Marino quietly continued doing what he loved most—helping stations win, coaching talent, refining morning shows, and developing programming strategies that touched markets across the country.
His career was nothing short of remarkable.
Marino programmed some of America’s most recognizable stations throughout his career, including KHHT “Hot 92.3” Los Angeles, while also serving in key programming roles in Las Vegas, Corpus Christi, San Francisco, and Riverside. Beyond the airwaves, he became a trusted consultant for numerous Urban AC, R&B, and Rhythmic stations, earning a reputation as one of radio’s sharpest format architects.
But perhaps his greatest legacy wasn’t a station.
It was an idea.
Long before content prep services became an everyday part of morning radio, Marino helped pioneer the concept by creating TheBitXChange, providing personalities with creative material that fueled countless morning shows across America. That innovation evolved over the years and continues today through services that still support broadcasters every single day.
Here’s the alternative perspective.
Every industry has people whose names the audience may never know…
…yet their fingerprints are everywhere.
Listeners may never have heard Mike Marino’s voice on the radio.
But they almost certainly heard his influence.
It lived in the promotions that made listeners laugh.
The morning show bits that became office conversation.
The music strategy that kept audiences listening longer.
The coaching that helped personalities become better storytellers.
The programming decisions that shaped stations for decades.
Those are the people who quietly change an industry.
Not by chasing attention…
But by making everyone around them better.
Mike Marino belonged to that rare class of broadcasters who understood that great radio isn’t created by accident. It comes from preparation, creativity, relentless curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to serving both listeners and talent.
His work helped define successful Urban AC programming while influencing broadcasters across multiple formats, proving that great programming principles transcend any single music genre.
Today, the radio community isn’t simply saying goodbye to a programmer.
It’s remembering a mentor.
A strategist.
An innovator.
And one of the behind-the-scenes architects who helped shape modern radio.
His impact will continue to be heard every morning, even after the microphone has gone silent.
On behalf of everyone at On The Dial, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Mike Marino’s family, friends, colleagues, and the many broadcasters whose careers were touched by his wisdom, generosity, and passion for great radio.
Rest in peace, Mike.
