The Morning Bull Is Charging Into Houston And Lois Lewis Is Back On The Air In A Big Way

Houston Country radio is getting a brand-new morning show.

Audacy Country 100.3 The Bull KILT-FM will launch The Morning Bull with Matt & Lois on Thursday, September 17, pairing Matt Wood with longtime Country programmer and personality Lois “Double-L” Lewis.

And this one immediately gets my attention because Lewis is not simply another personality being dropped into a morning show.

SHE KNOWS COUNTRY RADIO FROM INSIDE THE MACHINE.

Programming.

Music.

Talent.

Promotion.

Major markets.

Record labels.

Middays.

Afternoons.

Management.

And now?

HOUSTON MORNING DRIVE.

That is one heck of a toolbox to bring into a new show.

Lois Lewis Has Been Doing This At A Very High Level For A Very Long Time

Most recently, Lewis spent roughly a decade at iHeartMedia Country 102.5 KNIX Phoenix, where she served as Assistant Program Director, Music Director and midday personality.

That combination alone tells you what kind of broadcaster Houston is getting.

She wasn’t simply walking into the studio, opening the microphone and going home.

She was involved in the music strategy.

The brand.

The programming.

The day-to-day sound of one of America’s best-known Country stations.

And then she was the person listeners heard in the middle of the day.

That’s a very different level of understanding than simply knowing how to execute an airshift.

LOIS KNOWS WHY THE RADIO STATION SOUNDS THE WAY IT SOUNDS.

That matters.

Especially in mornings.

And Phoenix Wasnt Her First Rodeo

Before KNIX, Lewis had already established herself in major-market radio.

She worked at 95.5 The Bull KWNR Las Vegas, where she held programming responsibilities as APD and Music Director while also hosting middays.

And during her Las Vegas years, she was also heard in afternoons on Hot AC Mix 96.9 KMXP.

Country.

Hot AC.

Programming.

Music.

Talent.

Different audiences.

Different clocks.

Different expectations.

That kind of experience builds instincts.

And morning radio is all about instincts.

When do you keep talking?

When do you get out?

When do you lean into a story?

When does something become funny?

When is it time to shut up and play the song?

GOOD MORNING RADIO IS A THOUSAND LITTLE DECISIONS MADE IN REAL TIME.

Lewis has spent years making them.

She Also Understands Nashville From The Other Side

Here’s another piece of the résumé that makes this interesting.

Lewis spent time as Senior Director of Regional Promotion for Republic Nashville.

That means she has sat on the label side of the table too.

She understands how records are worked.

She understands artist relationships.

She understands what labels need from radio.

She understands what radio needs from labels.

And she understands that somewhere in the middle of all those conversations is the listener, who does not care about any of our industry politics and simply wants to hear something they love.

That perspective can be incredibly valuable at a Country station.

And It Goes Back To Tucson

Lewis also served as Music Director and night personality at KIIM Tucson, adding another Country radio chapter to a career that has touched multiple major Western markets.

So when you put the whole thing together…

Tucson.

Las Vegas.

Phoenix.

Nashville.

Now Houston.

That is a serious Country radio journey.

And after her exit from KNIX during iHeartMedia’s summer reductions, Lewis did not stay off the air very long.

GOOD.

Because experienced personalities and programmers shouldn’t disappear from radio simply because somebody somewhere decided to cut a budget.

Houston just benefited from somebody else’s loss.

Now Put Matt Wood Next To Her And See What Happens

The other half of the equation is Matt Wood.

And the important word in the new show’s name is not Matt.

It isn’t Lois.

It’s:

WITH.

Morning shows live or die on chemistry.

You can put two incredibly talented people in the same studio and get absolutely nothing.

Or you can find two personalities whose timing, instincts and differences create something neither could build alone.

That’s the experiment beginning September 17.

The Morning Bull with Matt & Lois.

The branding itself tells you Audacy wants the personalities front and center.

Good.

That’s exactly where they should be.

Houston Is Not A Market For Timid Radio

Let’s be clear about something.

Houston is enormous.

Competitive.

Diverse.

Fast-moving.

And Country has deep roots there.

This isn’t a market where you should launch a morning show designed merely to exist between commercials and songs.

YOU BETTER COME TO PLAY.

Make it funny.

Make it local.

Make it emotional.

Make it unpredictable.

Talk about Houston.

Go places.

Meet people.

Show up.

Let listeners know these are actual human beings living in the same world they are.

Because a morning show should not sound like four hours of polished corporate audio.

It should sound like something happened.

And Lois Brings Something Morning Shows Desperately Need

Perspective.

She has been the talent.

She has been management.

She has been a Music Director.

She has been an Assistant Program Director.

She has worked promotion on the record side.

She knows the pressure on the personality.

And she knows the pressure on the programmer.

That can make you a better teammate.

Because you understand why somebody is asking for what they’re asking for.

That doesn’t mean everybody agrees all the time.

Actually, please don’t.

DISAGRE ON THE AIR OCCASIONALLY.

That’s where personality lives.

But having somebody who understands the entire operation can help a show navigate everything happening around it.

An On The Dial Perspective

This is exactly why I keep saying radio cannot treat experienced talent as disposable.

Lewis left KNIX during a round of company cuts.

A few months later?

SHE’S HEADING TO MORNING DRIVE IN HOUSTON.

That tells you something.

When talented people become available, somebody else gets an opportunity.

And Houston just picked up somebody with a decade of recent experience at KNIX plus years of programming, music, air talent and label experience.

That’s not a résumé you casually leave sitting on the table.

Audacy didn’t.

Now the challenge is to give Matt and Lois room to create something.

Don’t overproduce it.

Don’t turn every conversation into a clock emergency.

Don’t make them sound like everybody else.

Let the audience learn who they are.

Let inside jokes develop.

Let stories breathe when they deserve to breathe.

Let them become part of Houston’s morning routine.

Because that’s the real goal.

Not launching a morning show.

BUILDING A MORNING HABIT.

September 17 Is Day One

Nobody knows what great chemistry sounds like before it happens.

That’s part of the fun.

September 17 is the introduction.

Then comes the work.

The first awkward bit.

The first show where everything clicks.

The first listener who starts calling every morning.

The first enormous local story.

The first moment everybody in the room realizes:

OH. WE HAVE A SHOW HERE.

That’s what Audacy is chasing.

And with Matt Wood and Lois Lewis behind the microphones, The Bull is making a serious investment in personality for Houston mornings.

Welcome back to morning radio, Double-L.

Houston, set the alarm.

Because beginning September 17…

THE BULL IS GETTING UP EARLY.

And if Matt and Lois find the right chemistry?

THIS THING COULD KICK PRETTY HARD.
