Salt Lake City has officially entered the Christmas music season while most of America is still arguing over pumpkin spice, football and whether putting up decorations before Halloween should be considered a misdemeanor. Capital Broadcasting’s 103.1 KLO-FM has become the first known full-time Christmas music flip of the 2026 season, making the move in September and repeating the same national attention-grabbing play it pulled last year when the station became the first Christmas outlet of 2025. Only this time, the move tells us something much bigger about what 103.1 is becoming.
This is not a random stunt anymore.
THIS IS A STRATEGY.
And apparently the strategy is:
IF CHRISTMAS IS COMING ANYWAY THEN WE ARE GOING TO GET THERE BEFORE EVERYBODY ELSE.
😂
SEPTEMBER
Let that word sit there for a second.
Not November.
Not the week before Thanksgiving.
Not November 1.
Not even October.
SEPTEMBER.
There are still people in Utah wearing shorts.
Real Salt Lake is still playing regular-season matches.
The mountains have not fully committed to winter.
And somewhere on 103.1 somebody has already hit:
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU
😂
That is not subtle.
That is radio planting a flag.
AND THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
That is where this story gets interesting.
Last year KLO made its Christmas move on October 7, when 103.1 was still coming out of its run as The Wave. The Salt Lake Tribune documented the abrupt switch from Classic Alternative into nonstop holiday music, with the station acknowledging at the time that the move was extraordinarily early even by Christmas-radio standards.
The Christmas presentation lasted through the holiday season.
Then on December 29, 2025, the station launched its permanent new format as Coast 103, built around a softer Adult Contemporary presentation.
Now Coast has reached its first full holiday season.
And what did they do?
THEY WENT EVEN EARLIER.
That is no accident.
THIS IS HOW A RADIO STATION CREATES OWNERSHIP
Christmas music is not merely another format.
It is behavioral.
People decorate to it.
Shop to it.
Drive to it.
Cook to it.
Wrap presents to it.
Cry to it.
Sing terribly to it.
Make children listen to the same twelve songs 900 times in the minivan to it.
😂
Once listeners decide:
103.1 IS THE CHRISTMAS STATION
that association can become incredibly powerful.
And being first helps.
FIRST MATTERS
Maybe not forever.
But initially?
Absolutely.
The first station to flip gets attention.
News coverage.
Social reaction.
People arguing.
People sharing screenshots.
People making jokes about how early it is.
And while everybody is arguing about whether September is ridiculous…
They are still saying the station’s name.
That is marketing.
Free marketing.
LAST YEAR PROVED PEOPLE WOULD TALK ABOUT IT
The Salt Lake Tribune wrote about the move.
Axios Salt Lake City covered it.
Listeners debated it.
The switch became a local story because October 7 already felt absurdly early.
So what does KLO do one year later?
Apparently it says:
YOU THOUGHT OCTOBER WAS EARLY
HOLD MY EGGNOG
😂
That is hilarious.
And strategically smart if the goal is brand recognition.
THE COAST FORMAT MAKES THE MOVE MORE LOGICAL THIS YEAR
This is the big difference between 2025 and 2026.
Last year Christmas was also a bridge.
The Wave was ending.
A permanent replacement had not yet launched.
Christmas became the transition.
This year Coast 103 already exists.
Its permanent identity is Soft AC, built around smoother Pop and Adult Contemporary music designed to be easy, familiar and relaxing.
That puts it naturally inside the Christmas-radio universe.
This is exactly the type of format that historically benefits from seasonal holiday programming.
So the 2026 move is less:
WE NEED SOMETHING TO PLAY WHILE WE CHANGE FORMATS
and more:
THIS IS NOW PART OF WHAT WE DO.
Huge difference.
AND SALT LAKE CITY IS A GREAT CHRISTMAS MARKET
Come on.
Utah?
Christmas?
This is not exactly a stretch.
The state has enormous family-oriented holiday culture.
Concerts.
Church events.
Temple Square traditions.
Holiday performances.
Local light displays.
Ski-season anticipation.
School programs.
Community events.
Utah’s December calendar is packed with Christmas productions, including major concerts at Kingsbury Hall, the Cathedral of the Madeleine and other venues across Salt Lake City.
That cultural environment gives Christmas radio a natural runway.
BUT SEPTEMBER STILL REQUIRES NERVE
😂
I do not care how Christmas-friendly the market is.
September is aggressive.
You are asking listeners to emotionally fast-forward three months.
That is a programming gamble.
Some people are going to love it.
Some are going to hate it.
Perfect.
Indifference is the enemy.
Radio should be willing to make somebody feel something.
THE WORST RADIO MOVE IS ONE NOBODY NOTICES
This is not that.
Nobody hears Brenda Lee in September and says:
INTERESTING NOTHING HAS CHANGED
😂
They notice.
Immediately.
And attention has value.
THERE IS ALSO A COMMERCIAL REASON THIS WORKS
Christmas programming creates a unique sales environment.
Retail.
Restaurants.
Shopping centers.
Holiday events.
Car dealers.
Gift promotions.
Charities.
Concerts.
Seasonal attractions.
Travel.
Retailers are already thinking about Q4 long before listeners are.
So a station that owns Christmas early can potentially build a very clear commercial identity around the holiday season.
That matters.
AND COAST 103 NEEDS SOMETHING DISTINCTIVE
This may be the most important programming angle.
Coast 103 is still young.
It launched at the end of December 2025.
That means the brand is not carrying decades of listener habit yet.
It needs identity.
It needs awareness.
It needs something people immediately associate with 103.1.
Owning Christmas could do that.
THE STATION HAS ALREADY PROVEN IT CAN CREATE ATTENTION WITH THIS
Last year’s Christmas stunt did exactly that.
Whatever people thought of it, they talked about 103.1.
When Coast launched afterward, the frequency had already spent nearly three months being rediscovered by people looking for holiday music.
That kind of sampling can matter.
AND THIS YEAR THERE IS NO FORMAT MYSTERY WAITING AFTER CHRISTMAS
At least not based on what we currently know.
Coast 103 is the established brand.
That changes listener expectation.
Last year Christmas was a bridge to something unknown.
This year Christmas is part of Coast’s calendar.
That makes the seasonal move feel more intentional.
ON THE DIAL PERSPECTIVE
I love this because it is stupidly early.
And I mean that as a compliment.
😂
Radio needs moves that make people react.
Nobody writes a local newspaper story because a station added three recurrent records.
Nobody texts their friend:
103.1 MOVED THE STOPSET BY 90 SECONDS
Christmas in September?
People talk.
That matters.
BUT IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THIS THEN GO ALL THE WAY
Do not just become a jukebox.
Own Salt Lake Christmas.
Local holiday events.
Lighting ceremonies.
Christmas concerts.
Food drives.
Toy drives.
Charities.
School choirs.
Local businesses.
Temple Square.
Utah holiday traditions.
Weather.
Skiing.
Family stories.
Make the station feel like Christmas in Utah, not merely a national playlist of Wham and Mariah.
That is where local radio wins.
THE MUSIC ITSELF IS NOT ENOUGH
Everybody has Christmas music.
Spotify has it.
Apple has it.
Amazon has it.
YouTube has enough Christmas playlists to keep Santa occupied until Easter.
What does 103.1 have?
SALT LAKE CITY.
Use it.
LET THE MARKET BECOME PART OF THE SOUND
Do Christmas lights from actual Utah neighborhoods.
Talk to local choirs.
Feature holiday charities.
Highlight concerts.
Have listeners call with traditions.
Get out into the market.
Turn Christmas 103 into something a playlist cannot reproduce.
That is how this becomes bigger than a seasonal flip.
AND MAYBE THIS IS BECOMING KLOS THING
There are stations known for flipping early every year.
Listeners anticipate it.
People guess the date.
Competitors watch.
Social media starts asking when it will happen.
That anticipation becomes programming.
If KLO continues this pattern, Salt Lake City may have found its annual Christmas starter pistol.
103.1 flips.
Everybody else knows:
THE WAR HAS STARTED
😂
BECAUSE THE REST OF THE MARKET WILL RESPOND
Maybe immediately.
Maybe not.
But programmers notice.
If another AC normally flips in November, now somebody has to ask:
Do we wait?
Do we move earlier?
Do we ignore them?
Is KLO taking audience?
Are we giving them weeks of uncontested Christmas listening?
That is where one station’s move becomes a market strategy problem.
CHRISTMAS RADIO IS A COMPETITIVE FORMAT
Never forget that.
It may sound warm and fuzzy.
It is not.
😂
Behind Frosty the Snowman are programmers watching quarter-hours.
Sales managers looking at retail categories.
Consultants watching cume.
Promotion departments booking Santa.
This is war with sleigh bells.
AND KLO JUST FIRED THE FIRST SHOT
September.
Salt Lake City.
103.1.
First known all-Christmas conversion of the year.
Second year in a row KLO gets there first.
That is no longer coincidence.
That is positioning.
COAST 103 MAY HAVE JUST FOUND ITS BIGGEST BRANDING WEAPON
The permanent format is still developing.
The station is still building audience identity.
But Christmas?
Everybody understands Christmas.
You do not need a research presentation to explain it.
Turn on 103.1.
Hear Christmas music.
Got it.
That is clarity.
NOW MAKE IT LOCAL
That is my challenge.
Do not settle for being the first Christmas station in America.
Be the best Christmas station in Utah.
Huge difference.
Make Salt Lake part of it.
Make northern Utah part of it.
Make families hear themselves.
Make the station feel like snow on the Wasatch.
Like downtown lights.
Like concerts.
Like ski season.
Like hot chocolate.
Like driving through neighborhoods looking at decorations.
Give the music geography.
BECAUSE THE FIRST STATION TO CHRISTMAS HAS ARRIVED
Again.
Earlier than last year.
Earlier than most sane people would ever consider doing it.
And apparently completely unconcerned that Halloween is still sitting there wondering what the hell happened.
😂
103.1 has made its decision.
Santa is already in the studio.
Mariah has been defrosted.
Brenda Lee has been summoned.
Wham is waiting.
And somewhere in Salt Lake City, somebody who just bought Halloween candy has turned on the radio and heard sleigh bells.
That is ridiculous.
That is brilliant.
That is radio.
MERRY CHRISTMAS SALT LAKE CITY
Apparently.
In September.
