There’s something refreshing about a radio company looking inside its own building and recognizing that the next great morning show might already be sitting down the hallway. That’s exactly what’s happening in Indianapolis, where Cumulus Media is bringing together two familiar local personalities for a new morning program on AC 107.9 The Mix WNTR. The Morning Mix with Toni & Ryan pairs longtime Indianapolis broadcaster Toni DeKeyser with Ryan Swiger, better known to 99.5 WZPL listeners as Crash. And while this might appear to be a routine personnel shuffle, it’s actually an interesting strategic move involving two stations, an established morning-show brand, and personalities who already understand the market.
DeKeyser’s connection to Indianapolis radio goes back to 2001, when she joined WZPL as a promotions assistant. She eventually became Marketing Director for the station group before moving into an on-air role with Dave Smiley’s morning show in 2011.
That’s twenty-five years of knowing the stations, the listeners, and the community.
Originally from Indianapolis and now living in Greenfield, DeKeyser has balanced her WZPL morning responsibilities with middays on 107.9 The Mix. Her new assignment gives her an opportunity to move into the spotlight as a morning-show co-host rather than dividing her time between two stations.
And then there’s Ryan Swiger.
Indianapolis listeners already know his work as Crash, the afternoon personality and Music Director at 99.5 WZPL. His résumé includes previous experience at Radio Now 100.9 WNOW-FM, programming 95.3 Gorilla WZNF in Gulfport, Mississippi, and on-air assignments in Charlotte, Terre Haute, and Vincennes.
He’s also an Indiana native, having grown up in Terre Haute.
So Cumulus isn’t importing two strangers and asking Indianapolis to get acquainted.
It’s taking two familiar voices and giving listeners a new reason to wake up with them.
That’s an important distinction.
The move also creates changes at sister station 99.5 WZPL, where DeKeyser has been a longtime member of The Smiley Morning Show and Swiger has handled afternoons.
For WZPL, that means adjusting a familiar lineup. For WNTR, it means a fresh morning identity built around personalities with established Indianapolis connections.
And there’s a competitive reason this matters.
Indianapolis has no shortage of established morning radio options, including WZPL’s own Dave Smiley, heritage country personalities, and nationally recognized programs such as The Bob & Tom Show.
Building audience loyalty in that environment requires more than good music and a clever slogan.
It requires chemistry.
It requires local knowledge.
And it requires understanding what people in Indianapolis actually care about when they’re heading down I-465, sitting in traffic on I-69, or making the morning commute from Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, and the surrounding communities.
I’ve always believed that the best morning shows make listeners feel as though they’re catching up with familiar friends rather than being subjected to a carefully rehearsed performance.
Toni and Ryan have an opportunity to build exactly that kind of relationship.
What’s especially interesting is that Cumulus is doing this at a time when the industry continues searching for ways to reduce expenses and streamline programming.
Instead of simply filling mornings with another syndicated program, the company is assembling a local show using people already familiar to its audience.
I like that approach.
And after twenty-five years in the Indianapolis radio building, it’s particularly nice to see DeKeyser getting an opportunity to help lead a morning program.
Sometimes the best programming decision isn’t finding the next big personality somewhere else. It’s recognizing the talent you’ve had in front of you all along.
Congratulations to Toni DeKeyser and Ryan Swiger on their new assignments.
Now comes the fun part: building a morning show that sounds like Indianapolis, connects with listeners, and gives 107.9 The Mix a personality-driven reason to be part of Central Indiana’s daily routine.
And to everyone at WZPL, I hope somebody remembered to update the studio schedule.
Moving two personalities between sister stations is one thing.
Figuring out who gets the good parking spaces afterward might be another story entirely.
