SummitMedia is making significant changes at its Birmingham headquarters, and three experienced broadcast leaders are reportedly out of the building. The departures of Senior Vice President of Programming Maurice DeVoe, Senior Vice President and Creative Director Val Nicholas, and Vice President of Engineering Jeff McGinley represent the kind of corporate restructuring that deserves more attention than another announcement about streamlining operations. Because when a radio company parts ways with people responsible for programming, creativity, and engineering, we’re not simply talking about eliminating positions. We’re talking about losing institutional knowledge that took years to develop.
And that’s something this industry has become far too comfortable doing.
DeVoe joined SummitMedia in 2020, initially overseeing operations in Greenville, South Carolina, before advancing to Senior Vice President of Programming in July 2024.
His career includes leading iHeartMedia’s 100.3 The Beat in St. Louis and extensive programming responsibilities with Cumulus Media in Dallas and Kansas City.
At SummitMedia, he helped guide the company’s Urban, Rhythmic, R&B, and Gospel programming operations, working with stations serving communities from Birmingham and Greenville to Knoxville and Honolulu.
That’s a considerable amount of programming experience walking out the door.
Then there’s Val Nicholas.
His résumé stretches well beyond traditional radio. With two decades at NBC Entertainment and NBC News, multiple Emmy Awards, and extensive experience developing national promotional campaigns, Nicholas brought serious creative credentials to SummitMedia.
He understood how to make content stand out in a crowded media environment.
And in today’s broadcasting business, creativity isn’t a luxury.
It’s survival.
Jeff McGinley’s departure adds another dimension to the changes.
As Vice President of Engineering, he represented the technical expertise necessary to keep a multi-market broadcast operation functioning.
I’ve always believed engineers are among the most underappreciated people in our industry.
Everybody notices when the station goes off the air.
Very few people stop to appreciate the individuals who make sure it doesn’t.
And here’s the bigger question surrounding these departures.
SummitMedia operates stations in markets including Birmingham, Greenville, Knoxville, Louisville, Omaha, Richmond, Springfield, and Honolulu.
These aren’t interchangeable communities, and the company’s success depends on understanding what makes each market different.
Programming leadership matters.
Creative leadership matters.
Engineering leadership matters.
So when all three disciplines experience senior-level departures during the same round of cuts, it’s reasonable to ask how the company intends to redistribute those responsibilities.
The precise financial motivation behind the reported reductions has not been publicly established, and there’s no verified basis for suggesting SummitMedia is preparing to sell stations or exit particular markets.
But the broader industry trend is difficult to ignore.
Radio companies continue searching for operational efficiencies while the people responsible for creating distinctive programming, developing campaigns, and maintaining broadcast infrastructure face increasing uncertainty.
Sometimes restructuring is necessary.
Sometimes responsibilities can be consolidated successfully.
But you cannot keep asking radio to become more innovative while treating experienced innovators as expendable.
That’s the contradiction our industry needs to confront.
To Maurice DeVoe, Val Nicholas, and Jeff McGinley, I hope the next chapter brings opportunities worthy of your experience.
And to SummitMedia, the question now is what comes next.
Because cutting three executive positions may change a company’s expense structure.
Replacing the knowledge, creativity, relationships, and technical experience those people brought to the table is an entirely different challenge.
And radio should never confuse the two.
