On The Dial | Radio People and Programming
Somebody at 99.9 WFRE in Frederick, Maryland, has apparently decided the station’s air talent lineup needed a little more action, and the changes are coming faster than a country singer can find something to rhyme with pickup truck. Just days after welcoming Matt Weitzel as Assistant Program Director and afternoon host, Local Daily Media’s country outlet has added SkyWalker to handle its nighttime programming through voice tracking. The latest move gives WFRE another recognizable personality in its lineup as the station continues making adjustments to its on-air presentation.
And with a name like SkyWalker, the jokes practically write themselves.
Although I suspect he’s heard every Star Wars reference imaginable, so I’ll try to exercise some restraint.
No promises.
Another Addition to the WFRE Lineup
The arrival of SkyWalker follows last week’s announcement that Matt Weitzel would join WFRE as APD and afternoon personality.
Together, the moves reflect continued attention to the station’s daily programming lineup.
SkyWalker will handle nights through voice tracking, a practice that has become a familiar part of modern radio operations.
And while the industry continues debating the merits of live versus recorded programming, the real question is whether the finished product connects with listeners.
A well-executed voice-tracked show can sound engaging, timely, and natural.
A poorly executed one can make listeners wonder why the announcer just wished everybody a beautiful sunny evening while they’re driving through a thunderstorm.
Execution matters.
So does personality.
The Force Is Strong but the Programming Still Matters
I’ve always believed radio stations benefit when they give listeners recognizable personalities rather than treating every music break like an interruption between commercials.
Voice tracking can provide flexibility, but technology doesn’t automatically create a connection.
That responsibility still belongs to the talent and the people programming the station.
The microphone doesn’t care whether the announcer is live or recorded. The listener cares whether the person behind it sounds worth listening to.
For WFRE, the addition of SkyWalker provides another opportunity to strengthen the station’s presentation while Weitzel settles into his afternoon and programming responsibilities.
And for SkyWalker, it’s another chance to make an impression on country listeners in Frederick and the surrounding communities.
Now, if somebody in management starts referring to the production studio as the Death Star, we may have a problem.
But until then, congratulations to SkyWalker, Matt Weitzel, and the team at 99.9 WFRE.
The station has been busy making personnel moves.
The next step is making sure those moves translate into a stronger listening experience.
Because in radio, the real force has never been the technology. It’s the personality that makes people want to tune in.
At On The Dial, we believe talented personalities remain essential to great radio, regardless of how a program reaches the air. Congratulations to SkyWalker on his new nighttime role at WFRE, and best wishes to the station as its updated lineup takes shape.
