On The Dial | Radio People and Programming

Atlanta has never been a city that goes quietly into the night, and Streetz 94.5 is about to make sure nobody forgets it. Core Radio Group is bringing one of the city’s familiar hip-hop personalities back to the evening airwaves as Joshua “J-Nicks” Nicks prepares to launch Nicks at Nite, a new 6–10 p.m. show on Streetz 94.5. After nearly two decades at rival Hot 107.9, where he helped entertain generations of Atlanta listeners, J-Nicks is stepping into a new chapter with a name that practically begs somebody to turn the radio up.

And before anybody asks, no, we’re not talking about Nickelodeon.

Although after nineteen years in Atlanta radio, J-Nicks has probably encountered enough cartoon characters in this business to fill an entire television network.

Nineteen Years of Making Noise in Atlanta

J-Nicks isn’t some newcomer arriving in Atlanta with a fresh pair of headphones and a dream of becoming the next big thing.

He’s already put in the work.

For nineteen years, he was part of Radio One’s Hot 107.9 WHTA, building a relationship with Atlanta’s hip-hop audience that stretched across multiple eras of music, personalities, and cultural changes.

He first made his mark at night as part of the Durrty Boyz before eventually moving into afternoons, remaining with the station from 2005 until 2024.

Think about that for a moment.

Nineteen years.

That’s long enough to watch entire musical movements rise, dominate, and eventually become the records everybody insists are classics.

It’s long enough to see artists go from handing out promotional CDs to selling out arenas.

And it’s certainly long enough to learn that Atlanta listeners know exactly what they like.

Before his Atlanta success, Nicks began his radio career at Q95.5 WFUN-FM in St. Louis.

His résumé also includes hosting BET’s legendary Rap City, giving him exposure beyond local radio and connecting him with hip-hop audiences across the country.

That’s a serious foundation.

And now he’s bringing that experience to Streetz.

A Familiar Voice With a Different Address

There’s something particularly interesting about this move.

Streetz 94.5 isn’t simply adding another personality to fill four hours of programming.

It’s bringing aboard a broadcaster whose voice has been part of Atlanta’s hip-hop identity for years.

And in a competitive market, familiarity matters.

Listeners build relationships with personalities over time. They recognize their voices, their humor, their musical instincts, and the way they connect with the community.

Those relationships don’t automatically disappear because a station changes or a personality moves across town.

Sometimes the audience follows.

Sometimes a new audience discovers what everybody else has been talking about.

And sometimes a familiar personality gets an opportunity to reinvent the next chapter of a career.

A frequency can change. A station logo can change. But a genuine connection with listeners doesn’t disappear just because somebody changes the address on the studio door.

That’s what makes this an intriguing addition for Streetz 94.5.

Atlanta Hip Hop Radio Is Not for the Timid

I’ve worked in Atlanta broadcasting, and I can tell you that the market has never been particularly forgiving of people who don’t understand its culture.

Atlanta doesn’t need somebody telling it what hip-hop is supposed to sound like.

Atlanta has spent decades helping define that sound for the rest of the world.

The city has produced artists, producers, DJs, and radio personalities whose influence extends far beyond Georgia.

And that means a hip-hop station has to offer something more than a playlist.

It needs personality.

It needs credibility.

It needs people who understand the music and the community.

J-Nicks has spent a substantial part of his professional life developing those relationships.

That doesn’t guarantee success at his new home, but it gives him something valuable to build upon.

And for Streetz 94.5, it’s an opportunity to strengthen its evening programming with a recognizable Atlanta voice.

The Nights Belong to Nicks

The new show is scheduled to occupy the 6–10 p.m. window, giving listeners four hours of J-Nicks as the city moves from the evening commute into Atlanta’s nightlife.

And let’s face it.

If you’re going to call a show Nicks at Nite, you’d better bring some energy.

Because Atlanta isn’t exactly known for rolling up the sidewalks at sunset.

There’s traffic.

There’s nightlife.

There’s music.

There’s always somebody trying to figure out why a drive that should take twenty minutes has somehow turned into an hour and fifteen.

And now there’s J-Nicks.

Congratulations to Joshua “J-Nicks” Nicks on the new opportunity, and to Core Radio Group for adding an experienced personality to Streetz 94.5.

After nineteen years at Hot 107.9, this is an opportunity to create something new without leaving behind the experience that helped establish his career.

Radio could use more stories about talented personalities finding new opportunities.

And Atlanta could always use another reason to turn up the volume.

J-Nicks spent nineteen years helping Atlanta get through the day. Now he’s coming back to own the night.

Somebody tell the competition to leave the porch light on.

Because Nicks at Nite is moving in.

At On The Dial, we believe great radio personalities are more than voices between songs. They’re part of the communities they serve and the culture they help shape. Congratulations to J-Nicks and Streetz 94.5 on this new chapter in Atlanta hip-hop radio.
