Somebody in Des Moines apparently decided that morning radio needed a little more horsepower, and they’re bringing in a broadcaster who knows exactly what happens when the microphones turn on and all hell breaks loose. Ryan Gibbons is taking over mornings at LAZER 103.3 KAZR beginning Monday, October 26, making the move from Seattle to Central Iowa. And while some broadcasters might consider that a dramatic change of scenery, I think this could be one of the more interesting morning-show appointments in rock radio this fall. Because Gibbons isn’t simply another personality looking for a place to tell jokes between Metallica records. He’s spent years learning how successful morning shows work, both behind the scenes and in front of the microphone.
And now he’s getting the opportunity to put that experience to work in a city that takes its rock radio seriously.
Gibbons most recently served as co-host and Executive Producer of KZOK Mornings on Seattle’s 102.5 KZOK, where he helped guide one of the Pacific Northwest’s established rock morning programs.
But his résumé includes something even more interesting.
He worked behind the scenes with Danny Bonaduce.
And anybody familiar with Bonaduce’s broadcasting career understands that producing his morning show probably provided enough real-world experience to qualify somebody for several advanced degrees in personality radio.
Bonaduce was never exactly known for delivering the most predictable morning radio.
That’s part of what made him entertaining.
And working in that environment requires timing, creativity, quick thinking, and the ability to recognize when an unexpected moment is about to become great radio.
Gibbons also brought those skills to Milwaukee, where he worked on the Riggs & Alley morning show at 103.7 KISS-FM, gaining experience in Contemporary Hit Radio before returning to rock programming in Seattle.
That’s an important part of his background.
He’s worked with different formats, different personalities, and different audiences. But the common denominator has always been compelling morning entertainment.
Now comes Des Moines.
And this isn’t some quiet little market where a morning personality can coast through four hours, read a couple of entertainment stories, and call it a day.
Central Iowa has a strong broadcasting tradition, loyal listeners, and a competitive radio environment where personalities can become part of people’s lives for years.
LAZER 103.3 has spent decades building a reputation around rock music, concerts, local promotions, and a connection with listeners who like their mornings served with a little attitude.
It’s the kind of station where the music can rattle the dashboard before you’ve even made it onto Interstate 235.
And beginning Monday, Gibbons becomes part of that experience.
From Ankeny to Altoona, West Des Moines to Urbandale, and across the growing Des Moines metropolitan area, he’ll have an opportunity to build relationships with people who want something more from morning radio than another playlist.
And that’s where I believe this appointment gets exciting.
I’ve always maintained that some of the best broadcasters in our industry started as producers.
They understand the mechanics of creating a great show.
They know how to prepare.
They understand timing, pacing, and the importance of building a conversation that makes listeners want to stay.
Most importantly, they know the difference between simply filling airtime and creating something people remember.
Ryan Gibbons has spent years helping make other people’s morning shows work. Now Des Moines gets to hear what happens when he’s handed the keys.
The move also creates a couple of changes elsewhere on LAZER’s schedule, with Wes Styles shifting to middays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Ethan Jackson moving into afternoon drive from 2 to 6 p.m.
But the headline here is Gibbons.
He’s arriving at a station with an established identity, an audience that expects entertainment, and an opportunity to bring something fresh to Central Iowa mornings.
And let’s give credit where it’s due.
At a time when so much of the radio industry seems obsessed with eliminating positions, consolidating programming, and figuring out how many markets one personality can cover without leaving the house, it’s encouraging to see a station bring in an experienced broadcaster to lead its morning presentation.
The next challenge is making the show unmistakably Des Moines.
Because Seattle may have helped shape Ryan Gibbons, but Iowa listeners will ultimately determine what kind of morning-show personality he becomes in their community.
Congratulations to Ryan on the new opportunity.
There’s nothing quite like walking into a new studio, opening a microphone, and knowing an entire market is about to decide whether you’re worth waking up for.
Seattle helped build the broadcaster. Milwaukee sharpened the producer. Now Des Moines gets the finished product and Ryan Gibbons gets the microphone.
And if Central Iowa thought LAZER 103.3 was already loud enough in the mornings, apparently somebody forgot to tell management.
Monday morning, October 26, the alarm goes off in Des Moines. And this time, Ryan Gibbons is answering it.
