A significant consolidation in Colorado public broadcasting is moving closer to reality.
Rocky Mountain Public Media has officially filed with the Federal Communications Commission to acquire Community Radio for Northern Colorado, advancing plans first announced earlier this year to bring two of the state’s most recognizable public media organizations under one umbrella.
If approved, the transaction would dramatically expand Rocky Mountain Public Media’s reach by adding 91.5 KUNC, Northern Colorado’s longtime public news and information station, along with 105.5 The Colorado Sound, one of the region’s premier Adult Album Alternative music outlets. The acquisition also includes an extensive network of full-power stations and translators serving communities throughout Colorado’s mountains, Front Range, and Eastern Plains.
Under the proposed agreement, Rocky Mountain Public Media will assume Community Radio for Northern Colorado’s outstanding liabilities while also receiving a $900,000 loan from the seller as part of the transaction.
The filing marks the next step in discussions that began in March, when both organizations announced they were exploring a strategic combination aimed at strengthening public media across Colorado. Since then, both groups have emphasized that the focus remains on improving operational efficiency while preserving local programming, community engagement, and editorial independence.
For listeners, the proposal is designed to be largely seamless. Stations are expected to maintain their local identities and continue serving their respective communities while benefiting from shared resources in areas such as finance, fundraising, technology, human resources, and administrative support.
The combined organization would unite one of the nation’s largest statewide public television networks with an established public radio operation that reaches thousands of listeners every day through news, music, and community programming.
At a time when many nonprofit media organizations continue searching for sustainable long-term business models, this proposed acquisition represents another example of public broadcasters choosing collaboration over competition.
If regulators approve the transaction, Colorado will gain one of the country’s most comprehensive statewide public media organizations—bringing together television, public radio, jazz, urban alternative programming, and an expansive network of local stations serving communities from the Front Range to the Western Slope.
