A major consolidation is on the horizon in southwest Missouri as Zimmer Communications and Mid-West Family Broadcasting prepare to combine their Springfield operations under a single management structure, creating one of the market’s largest locally focused radio groups.

Pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission, Zimmer Communications will assume management of a combined nine-station portfolio, bringing together two companies that have spent decades serving listeners and businesses throughout the Springfield region.

The transaction will unite Mid-West Family’s stations—Q92.9 KQRA, 102.1 The Won KOSP, 104.7 The Cave KKLH, and 105.1 The Bull KOMG—with Zimmer’s established Springfield brands, including 93.7 The Stage KZMO, 98.7 The Dove KTXR, Real Country 101.3 KWTO-FM, News/Talk 560 AM & 93.3 FM KWTO, and 96.9 The Jock KBFL.

Rather than signaling the end of local broadcasting, executives from both companies are positioning the agreement as an investment in its future. By combining resources, talent, and sales operations, the new organization expects to expand marketing opportunities for local businesses while strengthening its ability to deliver the hometown programming and community involvement that have long defined both companies.

Zimmer Communications President John Zimmer described the merger as a natural fit between two organizations that share a common philosophy centered on local service, community engagement, and investing in people. He noted that bringing the operations together will allow the combined company to deliver even more value to advertisers while continuing to serve listeners with the local content they’ve come to expect.

Mid-West Family Broadcasting President Mike Paterson reflected on the company’s more than three decades in the Springfield market, calling the partnership an exciting next chapter for both organizations. He emphasized that as the media landscape continues to evolve, combining the strengths of two respected Missouri broadcasters creates new opportunities not only for advertisers, but also for employees and the communities they serve.

The move represents another example of how local broadcasters are adapting to an increasingly competitive media environment. While national and digital competitors continue to reshape audience habits, companies with deep community roots are finding new ways to grow through strategic partnerships, operational efficiencies, and expanded local offerings.

If approved, the combined operation will immediately become one of Springfield’s most influential radio groups, with a diverse collection of brands spanning country, classic rock, sports, news, talk, and adult contemporary programming.

For Springfield listeners, the familiar voices aren’t going away. Instead, two respected Missouri broadcasters are betting that working together will create an even stronger future for local radio.
