Grand Rapids classic rock listeners are waking up to a familiar Detroit radio powerhouse. Cumulus Media’s 97 LAV (WLAV) has completed its morning show makeover, bringing Dave & Chuck The Freak to West Michigan beginning this morning. The syndicated show, originating from Beasley Media Group’s 101.1 WRIF in Detroit and distributed through Key Networks, now occupies the 6 to 10:30 a.m. weekday slot.

That is a substantial change for WLAV, and one that brings a very recognizable personality brand into the Grand Rapids morning market. Dave & Chuck The Freak have built a following with their unpredictable conversations, irreverent humor and anything-can-happen approach to morning radio. Their arrival gives 97 LAV a show with an established identity and a connection to a major neighboring market.

The move also closes a chapter for the station’s previous morning lineup. Michelle McKormick and Travis Gibbs had been holding down mornings until McKormick’s departure at the end of August. She subsequently moved across town to iHeartMedia’s Big 101.3 WBFX, leaving WLAV with a morning opening to fill.

Rather than simply finding another local host to step into the chair, Cumulus has chosen a show with an existing audience and a proven presence in Detroit. The decision also makes geographic sense. Detroit and Grand Rapids are different radio markets, but they share enough Michigan identity that a Detroit-based show can feel familiar to listeners west of the Motor City.

For 97 LAV, the challenge now is turning that familiarity into local loyalty. Syndication can deliver a recognizable product, but the station still has to make the show feel like part of the Grand Rapids listening day. That means strong promotion, smart local integration and giving listeners a reason to make the new morning routine stick.

One thing is certain: the morning competition in Grand Rapids just got a little more interesting. Dave and Chuck have a new audience to meet, WLAV has a new sound to establish, and listeners who were accustomed to hearing Michelle and Travis will have a different reason to reach for the radio.

The alarm clock has gone off, the microphones are open, and 97 LAV has officially entered a new morning chapter.
