Riley Couture Is Back Behind The Mic And Lite 96 Just Gave Northern Michigan Mornings A Major Market Jolt

There are résumés that tell you where somebody has worked, and then there are résumés that tell you somebody has survived radio. Riley Couture’s journey from an internship in Tampa through morning-show rooms in Grand Rapids, Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta and Washington has included enough formats, markets, personalities, moves and reinventions to qualify for the second category, and now she’s coming back to the medium that started the whole thing. MacDonald Garber Broadcasting has tapped Couture to join Mark Elliott on the Lite Breakfast Show at Lite 96 WLXT in Northern Michigan, putting a major-market morning personality into a decidedly local radio environment where chemistry and community may matter considerably more than market rank.

And maybe that’s exactly why this one is interesting.

Because Riley Couture isn’t coming to Northern Michigan to become a jukebox.

She’s coming to talk.

Thank God.

Radio has enough jukeboxes.

Riley Has Been Around The Morning Show Block

This isn’t somebody discovering morning radio for the first time.

Couture’s radio story began in Tampa, where she entered the business as an intern at legendary CHR 93.3 FLZ WFLZ.

That alone is a pretty good place to learn the insanity.

WFLZ wasn’t merely another Top 40 station. For generations of programmers and personalities, The Power Pig and the stations that followed became part of the mythology of aggressive, personality-driven CHR.

Imagine beginning there.

Watch.

Listen.

Learn.

Then somebody eventually hands you a microphone.

And once radio does that, the disease is usually permanent.

😂

From Tampa, Couture’s career started moving.

104.5 WSNX Grand Rapids.

Q107.5 WHBQ-FM Memphis.

107.5 The River WRVW Nashville.

Power 96.1 WWPW Atlanta.

Then came Washington.

Hot 99.5 Was A Completely Different Stage

In 2017, Couture made the jump from Atlanta to Hot 99.5 WIHT Washington, joining The Kane Show.

That’s not simply another line on the résumé.

Washington is one of America’s largest and most competitive radio markets, and The Kane Show was already an established morning franchise when Couture joined it.

She later became part of Your Morning Show, remaining in the Hot 99.5 morning ecosystem through 2022.

Think about the education inside that stretch alone.

Major-market morning radio.

Multiple personalities.

Phones.

Stories.

Benchmarks.

Social media.

Entertainment.

Show prep.

Breaking news happening in one of the most news-intensive cities on Earth.

And the peculiar art of figuring out how much of your actual life you’re willing to turn into tomorrow morning’s content.

That’s morning radio.

The microphone may only be on for a few hours.

The job follows you home.

But Her Career Before Washington May Be Even More Important

Couture didn’t magically appear in D.C.

She accumulated market after market.

In Grand Rapids, she worked mornings at WSNX.

In Memphis, her duties at WHBQ included mornings as well as other dayparts.

Then she joined Woody and Jim at 107.5 The River in Nashville, adding another established morning-show environment to her education before eventually moving to Atlanta. Her time at Power 96.1 included working mornings before the opportunity at Hot 99.5 arrived.

That’s a lot of different rooms.

And anybody who has worked morning radio knows every room teaches you something different.

One teaches timing.

Another teaches storytelling.

One teaches restraint.

Another teaches how to fight for your moment without destroying the chemistry.

One teaches you what works.

Another teaches you what absolutely doesn’t.

😂

Eventually, if you’re paying attention, all of it becomes part of your toolbox.

Couture has accumulated a pretty large toolbox.

Now Put Her Next To Mark Elliott

Here’s where this becomes a programming story.

Mark Elliott knows Northern Michigan.

Lite 96’s own description of Elliott emphasizes that relationship. He’s spent decades loving the region and has built the Breakfast Show around the everyday experience of living there.

The show isn’t pretending it’s broadcasting from Manhattan.

It isn’t supposed to.

That’s the advantage.

Elliott’s program already contains recurring pieces designed around companionship and familiarity, including the Culture Quiz and lighter news features, surrounded by the station’s feel-good AC music.

That’s the canvas.

Now add Riley Couture.

Not instead of Mark.

WITH Mark.

That’s the important distinction.

Don’t Turn Northern Michigan Into Washington

This is where programmers can screw up a move like this.

You hire somebody with major-market experience and immediately start trying to make the smaller-market station sound like the bigger market.

Don’t.

Northern Michigan doesn’t need Washington radio.

Northern Michigan needs great Northern Michigan radio.

The value Couture brings isn’t that she can make Petoskey sound like D.C.

It’s that she has spent years learning how professional morning shows create compelling content.

Bring that to Northern Michigan.

The pacing.

The storytelling.

The preparation.

The instinct.

The ability to turn an ordinary life experience into something a listener doesn’t want to leave before the next commercial break.

Then let Elliott supply the local connective tissue.

That’s potentially a very good marriage.

And Yes She Is Contributing Remotely

That part is going to generate discussion because this is radio in 2026.

Couture will contribute remotely.

There was a time when that sentence alone would have made programmers uncomfortable.

How do you create chemistry when the other personality isn’t physically sitting across the console?

Today?

We’ve learned how.

Technology has changed the question.

The issue isn’t whether somebody is physically in the studio every morning.

The issue is whether the listener can hear the distance.

That’s different.

If the conversation flows, the timing works, the preparation is there and the personalities genuinely develop a relationship, the listener eventually stops thinking about where everybody is sitting.

If it sounds like a Zoom meeting?

You’re dead.

😂

That’s the challenge.

Chemistry Is The Whole Ballgame

Morning radio isn’t three people taking turns talking.

It isn’t:

Host speaks.

Co-host speaks.

Producer laughs.

Traffic.

Song.

Congratulations.

You have created a meeting.

😂

A morning show works when the listener begins understanding the relationships.

They know who will disagree.

They know who can’t keep a secret.

They know who takes something too seriously.

They know who will make the inappropriate joke.

They know who is probably going to cry.

They know whose spouse is going to be irritated when this story gets told.

That’s intimacy.

And intimacy creates habit.

That’s why the first months of Elliott and Couture together will matter.

They need stories.

They need friction.

They need laughter.

They need disagreement.

They need enough space to discover who they are together instead of somebody deciding it in a conference room before the first show.

LET THEM BECOME A SHOW.

There’s Something Else Radio Should Notice Here

Riley Couture came back.

That’s worth celebrating.

Because this industry has spent the last several years watching talented people walk away.

Some were downsized.

Some were consolidated out.

Some discovered podcasting.

Some discovered content creation.

Some found careers where getting a text from the boss at 4:37 a.m. wasn’t considered perfectly normal.

😂

And some simply decided they’d had enough.

Couture maintained a multimedia presence outside traditional radio, including her own Really Riley podcast and other digital projects.

Yet here she is.

Back behind a radio microphone.

That says something.

Radio Still Has A Pull

People who have never done this business sometimes don’t understand it.

Radio gets under your skin.

You complain about it.

You swear you’re finished.

You talk about how much the business has changed.

You promise yourself you’re never going back.

Then somebody says:

Hey would you like to do mornings

And suddenly you’re thinking…

Well…

😂

Because there’s still something different about live radio.

There’s something about knowing somebody is driving to work right now.

Somebody is making breakfast right now.

Somebody is dropping a kid at school right now.

Somebody is having a terrible morning right now.

And your voice is coming through the speaker while their life is happening.

Podcasting is intimate.

Radio can be immediate.

The best personalities understand the difference.

The Other Smart Thing About This Move Is Experience

Radio has spent years talking about developing talent while simultaneously eliminating many of the places where talent used to develop.

Fewer live nights.

Fewer overnights.

Fewer weekend opportunities.

More voicetracking.

More centralized programming.

Then suddenly we wonder why there aren’t enough experienced personalities ready for morning drive.

Funny how that works.

😂

Couture has already accumulated the reps.

Tampa.

Grand Rapids.

Memphis.

Nashville.

Atlanta.

Washington.

That’s experience you can’t download.

She knows what it’s like when a morning segment dies.

She knows what happens when one catches fire.

She knows what it feels like when chemistry works.

And she has undoubtedly experienced the other kind too.

All of that matters when the microphone opens Monday morning.

And Mark Elliott Doesn’t Need Replacing

He needs somebody to play with.

That’s another reason this move makes sense.

Elliott has already established the Breakfast Show.

Lite 96 currently has him on from 6 to 9 a.m., with the station positioning the program around music, laughter and Northern Michigan life.

The foundation exists.

Couture doesn’t need to arrive with a wrecking ball.

She gets to bring another perspective into the room.

Another life.

Another set of experiences.

Another person for Elliott to bounce against.

And potentially another reason for a listener to stay through another break.

That’s the job.

On The Dial Perspective

Forget the market-size conversation.

Seriously.

Radio gets way too impressed with market numbers.

Great personalities don’t become less talented because the Nielsen market gets smaller.

Sometimes the opposite happens.

A personality gets more room.

More freedom.

More opportunity to actually talk.

More ability to become part of a community rather than simply another employee inside a giant operation.

Riley Couture has already done the major-market thing.

She’s worked in Atlanta.

She’s worked in Washington.

She’s been part of nationally recognized morning-show brands.

Now she gets a different challenge.

Can you take all of those major-market lessons and make them matter to somebody driving through Northern Michigan at 7:35 on a Tuesday morning?

That’s the test.

And it’s a good one.

Welcome Back Riley

There are easier careers than radio.

Probably several thousand of them.

😂

But when somebody who has experienced the peaks and valleys of this business decides she still wants another microphone, another morning and another chance to connect with listeners, I’m rooting for that.

Especially when the opportunity puts experience next to local knowledge.

Mark Elliott already knows the neighborhood.

Riley Couture knows morning radio.

Now comes the fun part.

Finding out what they sound like together.

The Lite Breakfast Show enters its new chapter Monday, September 21.

Northern Michigan gets another voice at breakfast.

Mark Elliott finally gets somebody else to argue with.

😂

And Riley Couture gets something that matters even more.

A microphone again.

Welcome back.

Now go make some radio.
