Family Life Ministries is continuing its expansion across Pennsylvania, and this latest acquisition comes with something radio operators understand immediately: a substantial upgrade in signal coverage. The Christian broadcasting organization has agreed to purchase WOTH 107.9, branded as Hot 107.9, in Williamsport from Backyard Broadcasting of Pennsylvania for $200,000, along with the station’s existing 103.3 translator, W277BJ. The deal gives Family Life something considerably more powerful than another small addition to its coverage map. It gives the organization access to a full-power Class A FM signal that can put its programming in front of a much larger potential audience.

And in radio, that difference is anything but small.

From a Super Translator to a Full Power FM

The most interesting part of this transaction isn’t simply the $200,000 purchase price. It’s what happens when the signal changes hands.

Family Life currently has access to 103.3 FM in Williamsport through W277BJ, a translator operating at 250 watts with an antenna height of approximately 412 meters above average terrain.

That’s a useful signal, but it has limitations.

WOTH operates on 107.9 FM as a Class A facility with 3.4 kilowatts of power and an antenna height of approximately 135 meters.

In other words, Family Life is moving from a translator with a very high antenna to a full-power FM facility with substantially more authorized power.

The two signals shouldn’t be compared by wattage alone. Antenna height, terrain, transmitter location, and the FCC’s protected service contours all play a role in determining actual coverage. But the upgrade gives Family Life a much stronger broadcasting platform in the Williamsport market.

It’s the difference between having a foothold and having a much more substantial presence.

Why Williamsport Matters

Williamsport sits in north-central Pennsylvania, a region where geography can make radio coverage particularly challenging. Hills, valleys, and changing terrain can complicate signal planning, making a stronger full-power facility an important asset.

For a faith-based broadcaster like Family Life, the acquisition offers an opportunity to extend its reach to more listeners, strengthen its presence in the region, and build on the network’s existing Pennsylvania footprint.

Family Life has developed a substantial broadcasting operation, combining radio programming with ministry, community outreach, and other family-oriented resources.

This acquisition fits that broader mission.

And it also demonstrates that religious broadcasting remains an active part of the radio ownership landscape, even as other operators continue consolidating, changing formats, and reassessing the economics of local radio.

Backyard Broadcasting Makes Another Market Exit

For Backyard Broadcasting of Pennsylvania, the sale represents another ownership change involving a station that has served the Williamsport area.

The $200,000 purchase price, together with the transfer of the associated translator, gives Family Life the opportunity to build on existing market coverage rather than starting from scratch.

The next steps will involve the regulatory process and the operational transition. The station’s eventual programming and branding under Family Life will be worth watching as the transaction moves forward.

And let’s be honest, the name Hot 107.9 may sound like a format that would be more comfortable playing the latest hits than leading a listener into a morning devotional.

But in radio, the frequency is only part of the story.

The real question is what the new owner plans to do with the signal.

The Bigger Picture

Family Life isn’t simply buying another frequency. It’s investing in reach.

In an industry where some broadcasters are shrinking footprints, selling facilities, or trying to figure out how to remain relevant in an increasingly crowded audio marketplace, Family Life continues to pursue opportunities to expand its distribution.

That doesn’t mean every acquisition will automatically translate into ratings success or a larger listening audience. Those results depend on programming, execution, promotion, and the ability to connect with listeners.

But the strategic opportunity is clear.

A full-power FM signal in Williamsport provides a stronger foundation than relying solely on a translator.

And for Family Life, the purchase adds another piece to its Pennsylvania broadcasting footprint.

The signal is getting bigger. Now the opportunity is to make the audience bigger, too.
