Somebody at Newberry Broadcasting apparently decided that one frequency wasn’t enough to spread a little happiness across South Central Kentucky. The company has expanded its Hot AC brand Zing 106.7 onto 92.1 WWZG Park City/Glasgow, giving the station a new FM home just in time for the holidays. And rather than ease listeners into the change, Newberry has handed the keys to Santa Claus.

The new 92.1 signal has temporarily become Santa 92.1, delivering wall-to-wall Christmas music through December 26. That’s right. The Halloween candy is barely gone, Thanksgiving hasn’t even arrived, and somebody in Kentucky has already plugged in the Christmas lights.

But behind the holiday wrapping paper is a significant broadcasting move.

WWZG was formerly WTKY-FM, the Country-formatted Kix 92.1 in Tompkinsville. Newberry acquired the station last fall and subsequently relocated it north, positioning the signal to serve the Park City and Glasgow area.

That gives Zing something more valuable than another holiday playlist: an expanded FM presence in its home market.

The station had been heard on 106.7 W294DB Glasgow, fed by 103.7 WHHT-HD3 Cave City. Adding WWZG creates another avenue for listeners to find the Hot AC brand, strengthening Newberry’s ability to promote the station and build its audience.

Under its regular “Feel Good. Stay Zing’d” identity, Zing features Murphy, Sam & Jodi in mornings, local personality Macy G in middays and The TJ Show in afternoons.

And there’s something worth appreciating about that lineup. In a radio world where stations increasingly rely on syndicated programming, Zing combines recognizable national personalities with a local voice in the middle of the day. It’s a programming approach that can give listeners familiarity without completely surrendering the hometown connection.

The Christmas flip also gives Newberry an attention-grabbing way to introduce the new frequency. Holiday music can attract casual listeners who might otherwise never discover the station, although keeping them around after December 26 will be the real test.

For now, South Central Kentucky has a new destination for its seasonal soundtrack, and Newberry has a larger platform for Zing.

Santa may be running the station for the next several weeks, but the bigger story is what happens when he packs up the sleigh.

Because come December 27, the presents will be unwrapped, the Christmas decorations will start coming down, and Newberry will have a bigger Hot AC operation ready to make some noise.

And somewhere in Kentucky, a programmer is probably already tired of hearing Mariah Carey.
