Tidwell Heads To Flagstaff – Stone Canyon Media

Lance Tidwell has never been just another programmer moving from one chair to the next. He has been one of those rare radio people who understands the music, the talent, the market, the revenue pressure, the brand promise and the emotional connection between a station and the people who choose it every day.

Now, after a long and respected run through some of the most competitive radio rooms in the country, Tidwell is sliding into a new role as Associate General Manager at Stone Canyon Media in Flagstaff, Arizona.

For Stone Canyon Media, this is not just a hire. This is a statement.

Tidwell’s road through radio has included leadership and programming stops with iHeartMedia, Cumulus Media, Citadel, Townsquare Media and SummitMedia. Along the way, he has worked in markets including San Antonio, Tucson, Kansas City, Fort Collins, Detroit and Birmingham, while also leaving his mark on stations and brands in Hartford, Seattle, Boise, Memphis, Monterey/Salinas and Columbia.

That is not just a resume. That is a radio map.

Tidwell has served as SVP of Programming for iHeartMedia in San Antonio and Tucson, Operations Manager for Cumulus Media’s Kansas City cluster, Program Director of KCMO-AM/FM, and part of the leadership structure connected to the Kansas City Chiefs Radio Network. He later moved to Townsquare Media’s Fort Collins cluster before heading to Cumulus Detroit as Director of FM Programming for WDVD and WDRQ. Most recently, he was connected to SummitMedia Birmingham, where his programming work included WZZK and WPYA.

Through all of those stops, the common thread has been creativity, discipline and the ability to make stations feel alive.

Tidwell has programmed Country, Hot AC, News/Talk and multiple local brands in markets where good was never good enough. He has coached talent, sharpened brands, built strategies, helped sales teams understand programming value, and worked inside the kind of pressure-filled environments where real radio leaders are made.

On The Dial President and Publisher Steven Mills said Tidwell’s move into management makes sense because his career has always been about more than clocks, categories and music logs.

“I’ve known Lance for over 15 years, and he has always been the creator of great radio,” Mills said. “Everywhere Lance has gone, he has understood how to build brands, coach people and make radio sound bigger than the building it comes from. It will be interesting to see how that translates into the Associate General Manager role, but knowing Lance, the transition will be seamless. Stone Canyon Media made a great choice.”

That may be the key to this move. Tidwell is not entering the AGM role as someone who only knows one side of the business. He comes from programming, but his career has consistently touched operations, culture, talent development, audience strategy and revenue support.

In today’s radio environment, that matters.

The industry needs leaders who can understand a ratings report and still understand the person driving to work before sunrise. It needs people who can talk brand strategy in a conference room and still know when a station simply does not feel right coming out of the speakers. Tidwell has spent his career living in both worlds.

At Stone Canyon Media, he now steps into a broader leadership position with a chance to help shape the future of a Flagstaff operation that serves a unique and deeply local part of Arizona. For a broadcaster with his background, this could be the perfect next chapter.

Lance Tidwell has built stations. He has built talent. He has built brands. Now he gets to help build the bigger picture.

This is the kind of move radio should celebrate. Lance Tidwell represents experience, creativity, leadership and the kind of programming soul this business still needs. Stone Canyon Media did not just add an Associate General Manager. They added a proven radio builder.
