One of Oklahoma’s most recognizable radio brands is preparing for a major upgrade, and when the dust settles, listeners across the Tulsa metro will find one of the market’s biggest news voices broadcasting from an even bigger signal.
Zoellner Media Group has announced that, effective August 31, News/Talk KRMG-FM and Hot AC Mix 96.5 KRAV will exchange frequencies, positioning KRMG’s FM programming on the more powerful 96.5 FM facility while Mix makes the move to 102.3 FM.
The move isn’t simply about changing dial positions.
It’s a strategic investment in the future.
By relocating KRMG to a stronger FM signal with broader regional coverage, Zoellner Media Group is positioning one of Tulsa’s heritage news and talk brands to reach more listeners across northeast Oklahoma while continuing to strengthen its presence in an increasingly competitive audio landscape. At the same time, Mix 96.5 begins a new chapter on its new home at 102.3 FM, where the station will continue serving its loyal audience with today’s biggest Hot AC favorites.
Behind the strategy is a leadership team that understands Tulsa radio perhaps better than anyone.
General Manager Steve Hunter has spent years helping shape the sound of the market. Long before leading the cluster, Hunter made his mark as Program Director at KRAV, helping establish the station as one of Tulsa’s premier music brands. That history makes this transition particularly noteworthy. Few executives have the perspective of someone who has helped build a station and now has the opportunity to guide an entire group through one of its most significant technical and branding moves in recent memory.
That’s the kind of institutional knowledge you can’t teach.
It’s earned.
And in an era when many broadcasters are looking only at the next quarter, Zoellner appears to be making a long-term play—matching the right brands with the right signals while positioning the cluster for continued growth.
Frequency swaps of this magnitude don’t happen every day. They require careful engineering, strategic planning, marketing coordination, and a clear vision for where each brand fits within the marketplace. The goal is simple: put each station in the strongest possible position to serve listeners and advertisers for years to come.
One question that remains unanswered is the future role of 740 KRMG, which has long served as part of the brand’s overall distribution strategy. Zoellner has not announced whether any changes are planned for the AM operation, leaving industry observers watching closely as the transition date approaches.
One thing, however, is already clear.
Tulsa listeners aren’t just witnessing a frequency change.
They’re watching a calculated move designed to strengthen two heritage brands while reinforcing Zoellner Media Group’s commitment to local broadcasting and the communities it serves.
Sometimes the biggest stories in radio aren’t about a new morning show or a format flip.
Sometimes they’re about making sure the right station has the strongest possible voice.
And that’s exactly what’s happening in Tulsa.
