Baltimore does not casually follow sports, and anybody attempting to build a sports radio station there had better understand that before the first microphone opens. WCBM Maryland has launched FOX Sports 1370 on WQLL AM in Pikesville, planting another full-time sports talk option in the Baltimore region with a weekday lineup stacked with some of FOX Sports Radio’s biggest national personalities. On paper, there is plenty of horsepower here. Dan Patrick. Colin Cowherd. LaVar Arrington. Brady Quinn. Jonas Knox. Stugotz. Covino and Rich. That’s an impressive collection of national talent, but launching a sports station in Baltimore creates one gigantic question that no network lineup can answer by itself.
WHERE’S BALTIMORE
Because this isn’t just another market.
This is Baltimore.
And Baltimore sports fans will absolutely let you know the difference.
The Network Lineup Is Loaded
Let’s start with what WQLL has assembled.
Morning drive begins with Two Pros and a Cup of Joe, featuring former NFL linebacker LaVar Arrington, former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn and Jonas Knox.
Then comes The Dan Patrick Show.
Then The Herd with Colin Cowherd.
Stugotz takes over from 3 to 5.
Covino and Rich handle 5 to 7.
FOX Sports Radio confirms that sequence as its current national weekday lineup, with additional national programming including The Odd Couple, The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon and The Ben Maller Show available later in the day.
That’s a serious amount of recognizable sports-talk talent.
And WQLL essentially gets to turn on the transmitter and immediately have a professional, polished national lineup.
That’s the beauty of network radio.
FLIP SWITCH
INSERT DAN PATRICK
😂
But that’s also where the programming conversation gets interesting.
Because Baltimore Already Has Sports To Talk About
Good Lord.
The Ravens alone could power a radio station.
The Orioles could power another one when they’re interesting and approximately seventeen phone lines when they’re making everybody angry.
Then you’ve got Maryland.
Navy.
Johns Hopkins lacrosse.
The Preakness.
High school sports.
Washington teams bleeding into parts of the market.
College basketball.
Local sports history.
Cal Ripken Jr.
Ray Lewis.
Johnny Unitas.
Brooks Robinson.
Ed Reed.
Jim Palmer.
The Colts.
The Ravens.
Camden Yards.
Memorial Stadium.
M&T Bank Stadium.
And approximately eight billion arguments over quarterbacks, coaches, ownership, draft picks and whether somebody should have gone for it on fourth down.
BALTIMORE DOES NOT HAVE A SHORTAGE OF SPORTS CONTENT.
It has a shortage of hours in the day to argue about all of it.
That’s Why The Next Move Matters More Than The Launch
WCBM Maryland says additional weeknight and weekend programming is still coming.
That’s where my ears perk up.
Because the national lineup gives FOX Sports 1370 an immediate foundation.
The next question is whether the station intends to build Baltimore around it.
Local afternoon show?
Ravens programming?
Orioles content?
Weekend personalities?
Local sports updates?
College shows?
Betting content?
Postgame?
Pre-game?
High school football?
A couple of Baltimore lunatics screaming at each other about Lamar Jackson until somebody knocks over a microphone?
😂
Come on.
That’s sports radio.
Baltimore Has Never Been A Passive Sports Market
That’s what makes this launch potentially interesting.
Some cities consume sports.
Baltimore lives inside them.
The Ravens aren’t simply an NFL franchise that happens to play there.
The Orioles aren’t merely another Major League Baseball team.
These organizations are tied into generations of civic identity.
That’s why sports radio works differently in markets like Baltimore.
The national conversation can absolutely succeed.
The NFL is the NFL.
Dan Patrick can make compelling radio anywhere.
Cowherd can generate arguments anywhere.
Stugotz can turn sports absurdity into entertainment anywhere.
But when the Ravens lose Sunday afternoon because of a fourth-quarter decision?
Nobody in Baltimore wakes up Monday morning desperate to hear four hours about the Dallas Cowboys.
😂
THEY WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE RAVENS.
Right now.
Immediately.
Preferably loudly.
That’s The Challenge With An All Network Sports Station
National sports radio is excellent at covering the national sports conversation.
That’s literally the product.
The biggest games.
The biggest personalities.
The NFL.
College football.
NBA.
Major League Baseball.
Playoffs.
Coaching changes.
Trades.
Drafts.
Controversies.
But sports fandom is inherently local.
Nobody becomes emotionally unstable because a professional sporting organization lost.
They become emotionally unstable because THEIR TEAM LOST.
That’s what sports radio monetizes better than almost anything else.
Emotion.
And FOX Sports Radio Gives WQLL A Hell Of A Starting Point
Dan Patrick has been one of sports media’s most recognizable personalities for decades.
Colin Cowherd has built an enormous multiplatform sports brand.
LaVar Arrington and Brady Quinn bring actual high-level football experience to morning drive.
Stugotz brings something completely different to afternoons.
Covino and Rich blend sports with lifestyle and entertainment.
FOX Sports Radio says its programming reaches nearly 15 million listeners nationally across terrestrial affiliates, digital distribution and its own platforms.
So WQLL isn’t trying to invent a national sports product from scratch.
It doesn’t need to.
FOX already built the factory.
WQLL JUST OPENED A BALTIMORE DISTRIBUTION CENTER.
The question is what the station adds locally.
And 1370 Is A Real Baltimore Area AM Facility
This isn’t an internet stream masquerading as a radio launch.
WQLL operates on 1370 kHz, licensed to Pikesville, Maryland. FCC records identify the station as a full-power AM facility serving from Baltimore County.
That’s important because sports remains one of the formats where AM can still make conceptual sense.
Sports listeners are seeking content.
They’ll tolerate audio imperfections.
They’ll follow personalities.
They’ll listen in the car.
They’ll stream when they’re outside the signal.
They’ll listen to a three-hour argument about whether a left tackle moved six inches before the snap and then call to argue that everybody on the show is an idiot.
😂
Sports talk is one of radio’s great appointment formats.
That’s valuable.
But The AM Dial Isn’t Enough Anymore
Let’s be clear about that too.
If FOX Sports 1370 is going to become a meaningful Baltimore sports brand, it cannot think like a station whose entire universe begins and ends at 1370 on the dashboard.
The brand needs streaming.
Clips.
Social.
Podcasts.
Video.
YouTube.
Short-form reactions.
Breaking-news alerts.
Postgame content.
Talent who understand that the show continues after the microphone closes.
That’s modern sports radio.
The transmitter is the foundation.
THE BRAND HAS TO BE EVERYWHERE.
Because the 23-year-old Ravens fan may never intentionally tune an AM frequency.
But show him a killer 45-second argument about the Ravens on his phone?
Now you’ve got him.
Get him into the ecosystem.
This Is Where Local Talent Could Make The Difference
FOX Sports 1370 doesn’t need twelve local hosts tomorrow morning.
That would be ridiculous.
The network gives WCBM Maryland the luxury of building deliberately.
Find the right Baltimore voices.
Not necessarily the person with the biggest résumé.
Find somebody who knows the city.
Find somebody who knows the Ravens.
Find somebody who understands the Orioles.
Find somebody who knows why Baltimore sports fans react differently to certain things than somebody sitting in Phoenix or Los Angeles.
Find somebody who can walk into a bar in Towson after a Ravens loss and understand exactly what everybody is arguing about before ordering a drink.
THAT’S LOCAL SPORTS RADIO.
You cannot download that from a satellite.
And Please Don’t Make Local Mean Boring
This is another trap.
Local sports radio doesn’t automatically become good because somebody mentions the Beltway.
😂
Personality matters.
Chemistry matters.
Opinion matters.
Humor matters.
Preparation matters.
Storytelling matters.
You need people who are entertaining even when nothing happened.
That’s the hardest part of sports talk.
Everybody can do Monday morning after the Super Bowl.
Try doing Wednesday in June when the Orioles are off, Ravens camp hasn’t started and the biggest sports story is somebody’s hamstring.
THAT’S WHEN YOU FIND OUT WHO CAN HOST.
Baltimore Has Produced Some Serious Sports Radio
That’s another reason the bar is high.
This market understands sports personalities.
It understands team coverage.
It understands long-form conversation.
It understands callers.
It understands what happens when a sports topic becomes something larger than the scoreboard.
So FOX Sports 1370 isn’t entering some virgin territory where everybody is thrilled simply because somebody discovered sports talk.
Baltimore listeners already know what good sports radio sounds like.
That’s a blessing.
And a warning.
On The Dial Perspective
I like the bones of this.
A real AM signal.
A recognizable national sports brand.
A weekday lineup requiring almost no introduction.
Football expertise in mornings.
Dan Patrick.
Cowherd.
Stugotz.
Covino and Rich.
That’s enough established talent to put a legitimate sports product on the air immediately.
But that’s Phase One.
Phase Two determines whether FOX Sports 1370 becomes merely a place Baltimore listeners can hear national FOX Sports Radio programming or whether it becomes an actual Baltimore sports station.
Those aren’t the same thing.
Give Baltimore A Reason To Own It
Put some Baltimore voices on it.
Build around the Ravens.
Build around the Orioles.
Use the weekends.
Own breaking local sports news.
Get personalities into the stadiums.
Get them into sports bars.
Get them around the fans.
Let the national shows provide scale.
Let Baltimore provide the soul.
That’s the formula.
And when the Ravens blow a lead with 1:47 remaining on a Sunday afternoon?
FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING HOLY HAVE SOMEBODY LOCAL READY TO OPEN A MICROPHONE.
😂
Because that’s when a sports station earns its existence.
Not when everything is going perfectly.
When everybody in town is pissed off.
FOX Sports 1370 Is On
The transmitter is running.
The network shows are loaded.
FOX Sports Radio supplies a national lineup stretching from morning drive deep into overnight hours, giving WQLL a turnkey programming backbone immediately.
Now comes the fun part.
What does WCBM Maryland build around it?
Because Baltimore doesn’t need somebody to explain sports to it.
Baltimore needs somewhere to live sports out loud.
The station has FOX.
It has Dan.
It has Colin.
It has LaVar.
It has Brady.
It has Stugotz.
It has Covino and Rich.
Great.
NOW GIVE THE DAMN THING SOME CRAB CAKES AND A RAVENS POSTGAME SHOW.
Then we’ll really have something.
