Heather Roberts Elevated To News Director At KXL Portland

Some promotions are simply title changes.

Others are the natural next step for someone who has spent years chasing stories, building sources, and proving they know what it takes to lead a newsroom.

That appears to be exactly what is happening at News/Talk 101.1 KXL in Portland.

Connoisseur Media has elevated morning news co-anchor Heather Roberts to News Director, placing her in charge of the station’s editorial leadership while she continues her daily on-air duties.

In her expanded role, Roberts will help shape the direction of KXL’s news coverage, oversee content strategy, and guide the newsroom’s approach to delivering local and regional news to listeners throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The promotion comes less than two years after Roberts joined KXL, but her background in journalism stretches much further. Before arriving in Portland, she built an impressive resume that included work as a field producer for ABC News and a variety of positions throughout Oregon’s media landscape, ranging from news gathering to promotions and sales. She is also the founder and operator of the Oregon Radio News Network, giving her a unique perspective on both local reporting and statewide news coverage.

Inside Oregon broadcasting circles, Roberts has earned a reputation as someone who understands that news is more than headlines. It’s relationships, trust, accuracy, and being willing to go where the story leads.

Her promotion also continues the evolution of KXL’s leadership team following last year’s advancement of Grant McHill into the Program Director role. With McHill overseeing programming and Roberts now leading the newsroom, the station continues to build a leadership structure focused on strengthening one of the region’s most recognizable news brands.

For KXL listeners, the change may not be immediately noticeable. Roberts will remain a familiar voice on the station’s morning coverage. Behind the scenes, however, she will now have a much larger hand in determining which stories are covered, how they are presented, and where the newsroom’s focus is directed moving forward.

In an era where local journalism continues to face significant challenges, stations that invest in experienced news leadership are making a statement about the value of local reporting. This promotion signals confidence in Roberts’ ability to help guide KXL through an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing media environment.

For Roberts, it represents another milestone in a career built around informing communities and keeping audiences connected to the stories that matter most.
