TJ Johnson Is Coming Home to Dayton and K99.1 Is Putting Local Back Into Country Nights

Some radio hires look like somebody filling an empty square on a programming grid and others tell you something considerably more important about what a station wants to be. K99.1 is making the second kind of move in Dayton by bringing Thomas TJ Johnson back to the Miami Valley and handing him the keys to New Country Nights from 7 p.m. to midnight which means a personality who already knows this market is returning to town and getting five hours every weeknight to reconnect with it.

TJ IS COMING BACK TO DAYTON

And if you believe local radio still matters this is exactly the kind of sentence you want to write.

Because this isn’t Dayton meeting TJ Johnson.

THIS IS DAYTON GETTING TJ JOHNSON BACK

The Miami Valley Has Heard This Voice Before

Before Johnson headed home to Long Island he spent part of his career working in Dayton at Hot 102.9 WDHT.

And this isn’t simply industry biography passed from one announcement to another.

There’s local historical evidence of it.

A 2019 SUNY Old Westbury publication identifying professionals involved in its Student Media Arts Celebration listed Thomas TJ Smooth Johnson with Hot 102.9 in Dayton.

That puts some substance behind the homecoming narrative.

TJ didn’t fly into Dayton this week armed with Google Maps and a company bio.

He’s worked here.

He’s done radio here.

He understands something about the people who live here.

Then his career took him back to Long Island where he eventually became part of Cox Media Group sister station WBLI.

Now Cox is bringing him back into the Miami Valley radio conversation.

Different station.

Very different music.

Same market.

FULL CIRCLE

And Can We Talk About the Format Jump for a Minute

Because this is where the radio nerd in me gets interested.

Hot 102.9?

Rhythmic.

WBLI?

Top 40.

K99.1?

COUNTRY

That’s a trip.

😂

But maybe that’s exactly why this could be fun.

Great personality radio shouldn’t require somebody to spend an entire career trapped inside one musical format.

The fundamentals don’t change because the records do.

Know how to talk to people.

Know when to get out of the way.

Understand pacing.

Know how to use phones.

Understand the market.

Know what’s happening tonight.

Know what’s happening this weekend.

Make listeners feel like somebody is actually sitting on the other side of that speaker.

You can teach somebody a music library.

TEACHING SOMEBODY HOW TO CONNECT IS A LOT HARDER

K99.1 Is Already a Personality Driven Country Station

Spend some time with K99.1’s own lineup and the strategy becomes clearer.

The station starts weekdays with Nancy and Woody from 5 to 9.

Nikki Montgomery follows from 9 to 2.

Shane Collins handles afternoons from 2 to 7.

And until this transition Jordan Knight has occupied the 7 p.m. to midnight window.

This is not a station presenting itself as a jukebox with a transmitter attached.

K99.1 puts personalities front and center.

Its website doesn’t hide them somewhere underneath twenty celebrity stories.

There’s an entire on air structure built around them.

So bringing TJ into nights fits the product.

But there’s an important difference in what comes next.

Jordan Knight Was Doing Dayton From Orlando

Jordan Knight has been part of K99.1 nights for nearly a decade.

That’s a hell of a run.

And he isn’t leaving Cox Media Group.

Knight who also goes by Slater is concentrating on his full time morning role at sister country station K92.3 WWKA in Orlando where he is part of the Obie Chloe and Slater morning show.

That means the K99.1 evening program he had been delivering remotely can now move into the hands of someone being brought back to Dayton specifically for the job.

Read that again.

Because we’ve spent years covering radio moving in the opposite direction.

Local show becomes regional.

Regional becomes national.

Live becomes tracked.

Market based becomes hub based.

Then everybody attends a conference panel asking why listeners don’t think radio feels local anymore.

K99.1 just made a move pointing the other way.

BRING SOMEBODY BACK WHO KNOWS THE MARKET

What a concept.

This Is Bigger Than Where the Microphone Sits

Let’s be careful though.

Local radio isn’t magically created because somebody has a 937 area code.

You have to use the opportunity.

That’s where TJ’s assignment becomes interesting.

Five hours of country radio every night gives K99.1 a huge canvas.

Concerts.

Bars.

Restaurants.

High school sports.

College life.

Weather.

Traffic.

Festivals.

County fairs.

The stuff everybody at work is talking about.

The ridiculous thing that happened in Beavercreek.

The concert coming through the Rose.

The listener driving home from second shift.

The woman stocking shelves who has K99.1 playing in the background.

The truck driver heading down I 75.

The college kid who somehow just discovered a country record his parents have known for years.

THAT IS THE SHOW

The songs are the architecture.

The people are the building.

Dayton Radio Has Always Rewarded Personalities Who Become Part of the Place

That’s why this matters in a market like Dayton.

Dayton isn’t New York.

It isn’t Los Angeles.

It doesn’t need somebody parachuting into a studio every night pretending to understand southwest Ohio.

The Miami Valley has historically rewarded radio personalities who stay long enough to become familiar.

People remember voices here.

They remember morning teams.

They remember where somebody worked before.

They remember the station they listened to in high school.

They remember the DJ who showed up at the festival.

They remember who was on the radio during the tornado.

They remember who made them laugh driving to work.

Radio in a market like Dayton can still become intensely personal.

But only if we allow personalities enough room to become people.

TJ already has a head start.

HE HAS HISTORY HERE

And Nancy Wilson Knows Exactly What She Is Getting

K99.1 Program Director and morning personality Nancy Wilson isn’t bringing in a complete stranger and hoping the audience figures him out.

She’s bringing back someone with previous Dayton radio experience and putting him into one of the longest personality windows on the station.

That’s a five hour nightly opportunity to build something.

Not merely execute a clock.

Build something.

There is a difference.

The best evening radio has always had a slightly different relationship with listeners than other dayparts.

Mornings have utility.

Afternoons have momentum.

Nights can have intimacy.

The audience changes.

The mood changes.

People have more time.

Phones can breathe.

Stories can breathe.

Personality can breathe.

And country is particularly good territory for that because the format itself is built around stories and relationships.

Give the right personality room and nighttime country radio can feel like hanging out with somebody rather than consuming content.

This Is Also a Reminder That Radio Careers Are Rarely Straight Lines

TJ went from Dayton to Long Island.

From Rhythmic radio into Top 40.

And now from Long Island back to Dayton and into Country.

That career path would probably give an HR algorithm a nervous breakdown.

😂

Good.

Radio careers aren’t supposed to look like spreadsheets.

Some of the best programmers and personalities in this business have crossed formats.

Rock people have programmed Country.

Top 40 personalities have gone Hot AC.

Urban programmers have built mainstream stations.

Country personalities have crossed into talk.

Because the fundamental skill isn’t knowing which Luke Combs song tested a 92.

It’s understanding human beings.

Formats are strategic frameworks.

Personalities create relationships inside them.

And We Need to Give Jordan Knight His Flowers Too

It would be easy to write this entire story around the new guy and forget the person who occupied the chair before him.

We’re not doing that.

Nearly a decade of nights on one station is meaningful.

Period.

Knight maintained a presence on K99.1 while simultaneously building his role in Orlando and he remains part of the Cox Media Group country operation there.

K99.1’s own recently crawled lineup still showed him occupying Sunday through Friday nights from 7 to midnight.

Now his attention can remain centered on mornings at K92.3 while Dayton gets somebody dedicated to writing the next chapter of K99.1 nights.

Everybody gets to move forward.

But The On The Dial Perspective Is Pretty Simple

We spend a lot of time criticizing radio when companies remove local personalities.

So when somebody makes a move that potentially puts more market familiarity into the product we ought to notice that too.

This doesn’t single handedly reverse decades of consolidation.

Nobody needs to commission a documentary.

😂

But direction matters.

And the direction here is worth applauding.

A personality once heard in Dayton leaves.

Builds another chapter of his career.

Works in another major market.

Then gets the call.

COME BACK

There’s something wonderfully radio about that.

Because unlike an algorithm radio has a memory.

Listeners have memories too.

And sometimes the best new voice for a radio station isn’t actually new at all.

Welcome Home TJ

Now comes the important part.

Don’t just come back to Dayton.

BE DAYTON

Go to the games.

Go to the shows.

Know the neighborhoods.

Know the restaurants.

Talk to the listeners.

Get outside the studio.

Find the characters.

Tell the stories.

Be there when something happens.

Make the person listening at 10 47 at night believe that somebody on K99.1 actually understands where they live.

Because Spotify can play the same country songs.

Apple Music can play the same country songs.

YouTube can play the same country songs.

Every DSP on somebody’s phone can play the same country songs.

They cannot be TJ Johnson live in the Miami Valley tonight.

That’s the advantage.

Use it.

After years of watching radio personalities get moved farther and farther away from the communities coming out of the speakers K99.1 gets to try something refreshingly simple.

Bring one home.

Hand him the microphone.

Turn him loose.

And see whether Dayton remembers.

Something tells us it will.
